Driving Your Vehicle

Starting the Engine

~3min read

WARNING - Proper Footwear

Always wear proper footwear when driving. Improper footwear (high heels, ski boots, sandals, etc.) may prevent you from operating the brake and accelerator pedals properly.

Starting the Engine with the Ignition Key (if equipped)

1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

2. Manual transaxle: Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transmission into Neutral. While holding the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed, turn the ignition key to the START position.

Intelligent Variable Transmission: Move the shift lever to P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal.

You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in N (Neutral).

3. Turn the ignition key to the START position and hold it until the engine starts (10 seconds maximum), then release the key.

Start the engine without depressing the accelerator pedal.

4. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stationary.

Start moving at moderate engine speed. (Avoid excessive and/or rapid acceleration and deceleration.)

If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift the shift lever to P (Park). If traffic and road conditions permit, shift the shift lever to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is moving and turn the ignition key to the START position to attempt to restart the engine.

WARNING - Starter

Do not operate the starter motor for more than 10 seconds. If the engine stalls or fails to start, wait 5-10 seconds before operating the starter again. Improper use of the starter may damage it.

Starting the Engine with the Smart Key (if equipped)

1. Carry the electronic key or leave it in the vehicle.

2. Make sure the parking brake is firmly applied.

3. Move the shift lever to P (Park).

4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button while depressing the brake pedal.

5. In very cold weather (below 0°F / -18°C) or after the vehicle has not been operated for several days, allow the engine to warm up without depressing the accelerator pedal.

Whether the engine is cold or warm, it should be started without pressing the accelerator.

  • Even if the Smart Key is inside the vehicle but far from you, the engine may not start.
  • When the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the ACC position or higher, if the door is open, the system checks for the Smart Key. If the Smart Key is not in the vehicle, the "" or "" indicator will flash or the "Key Not in Vehicle" warning will appear on the LCD display. If all doors are closed, a chime will sound for 5 seconds. The indicator or warning turns off while the vehicle is moving. Always keep the Smart Key with you.

The engine will start only when the Smart Key is inside the vehicle.

WARNING - Unintended Vehicle Movement

Never leave the Smart Key in the vehicle with children or other passengers who are unfamiliar with the vehicle's operation. Pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button while the Smart Key is inside the vehicle may result in unintentional engine start and/or unintended vehicle movement.

  • If the battery is discharged or the Smart Key is not operating properly, you can start the engine by pressing the Engine Start/Stop button with the Smart Key.
  • When the stop lamp fuse has blown, the engine cannot be started normally. Replace the fuse with a new one. If this is not possible, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button for 10 seconds while it is in the ACC position. The engine can start without depressing the brake pedal. However, for your safety, always depress the brake pedal before starting the engine.

CAUTION

Do not press the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 10 seconds, except when the stop lamp fuse has blown.
