Travel abroad

~1min read

The Mercedes E-Class (4th gen, W212, 2009–2016) offers practical functions for travel abroad, including the option to adjust the headlamps for right-hand or left-hand traffic. This prevents dazzling oncoming traffic and safely meets legal requirements in other countries. The Intelligent Light System also ensures optimum visibility in changing conditions.

General Notes

In countries where traffic drives on the opposite side of the road from the country of registration, set the headlamps to symmetrical low beam (exception: vehicles with static LED headlamps) as close to the border as possible before crossing. This prevents dazzling oncoming traffic. With symmetrical low beam, the edge of the road is not illuminated as far or as high.

Vehicles with static LED headlamps

Switching the headlamps to symmetrical low beam is not required in countries where traffic drives on the opposite side of the road from the country of registration. The legal requirements are met without switching.

Vehicles with Intelligent Light System

Before crossing a border, use the "Low beam for left-hand or right-hand traffic" function in the on-board computer to switch the headlamps to symmetrical low beam, and after returning, switch them back to asymmetrical low beam.

When the headlamps are set to symmetrical low beam, the "Motorway light" and "Extended fog light" functions are not available.

The Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) offers safety when travelling abroad thanks to its lighting systems. Switching the headlamps to symmetrical low beam prevents dazzling oncoming traffic in countries with different traffic direction.

Particularly convenient: vehicles with static LED headlamps or Intelligent Light System adapt to legal requirements without additional measures. This keeps the trip abroad safe and uncomplicated.
