Driving Systems. Tyres

~2min read

The driving systems and tire pressure monitoring of the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation, W212, 2009–2016) contribute significantly to safety. This section explains the meaning of warning lamps for insufficient distance or tire pressure loss and gives tips on how to react correctly in critical situations. This keeps the vehicle easy to control even in the event of a malfunction.

Driving systems

Problem Possible causes/consequences and solutions

The red DISTRONIC warning lamp is lit while driving.

The distance to the vehicle ahead is too short for the selected speed.

Increase the distance.

The red DISTRONIC warning lamp is lit while driving. In addition, a warning tone sounds.

You are approaching a vehicle, a pedestrian or a stationary obstacle on your expected route at too high a speed.

Be ready to brake immediately.

Watch the traffic situation carefully. If necessary, brake or steer around an obstacle.

Tires

Problem Possible causes/consequences and solutions

The yellow tire pressure monitor warning lamp (pressure loss/malfunction) is lit.

The tire pressure monitor has detected a loss of tire pressure in at least one tire.

WARNING

Driving on tires with insufficient tire pressure involves the following risks:
  • Tires may burst, especially with increasing load and speed.
  • Tires may wear excessively and/or unevenly, which can significantly reduce tire grip.
  • Handling, steering and braking behavior may be severely impaired.

There is a risk of accidents!

Stop without sudden steering or braking maneuvers. Take traffic conditions into account.

Secure the vehicle against rolling away.

Observe the additional messages in the multifunction display.

Check the tires and, if necessary, follow the instructions for a tire puncture.

Check tire pressure.

If necessary, correct the tire pressure.

The yellow tire pressure monitor warning lamp (pressure loss/malfunction) flashes for approximately one minute and then remains lit continuously.

Tire pressure monitoring is defective.

WARNING

The system may not be able to detect or report low tire pressure as intended.

There is a risk of accidents!

Observe the additional messages in the multifunction display.

Consult a qualified specialist workshop.

The driving systems and the tire pressure monitor of the Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) actively contribute to safety on the road. Whether distance warning or tire pressure monitoring, these systems support the driver in critical situations and help prevent accidents.

Regularly checking tire pressure and responding attentively to warning messages are essential to ensure the safety of the vehicle and all occupants. Mercedes shows here how intelligent technology reliably supports the driver.

Question: What should you do if the tire pressure monitor reports a malfunction?

Answer: Have the system checked and repaired at a qualified workshop.

Question: Why is maintaining the correct distance while driving so important?

Answer: To be able to react in time and avoid rear-end collisions, especially when the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly.
