Automatic gearbox

~5min read

The 4- or 6-speed automatic gearbox offers a choice of the comfort of the self-adaptive program, enhanced by a selection suited to dynamic driving conditions: sport, or driving on slippery roads: snow.

However, manual selection remains available using the gear lever.

Selector gate positions

  • Move the lever in the gate to select a position.

The position indicator is shown on the instrument cluster screen.

Park: to immobilise the vehicle and to start the engine, parking brake applied.

Reverse: to reverse (select this position with the vehicle stopped and the engine idling).

Neutral: to start the engine and to park, parking brake applied.

Note: if position N is engaged inadvertently while driving, let the engine slow down before engaging position D, then accelerate.

Drive: to drive in automatic mode.

Manual: to drive by selecting the gears.

S: sport mode.

Mise en route du moteur: snow mode.

Starting the engine

  • parking brake applied, select position P or N on the gate,
  • turn the ignition key.

Starting the vehicle

With the engine running, start the vehicle from position P:

  • to leave position P, you must press the brake pedal,
  • select position R, D or M, then gradually release the brake pedal; the vehicle moves off immediately.

To start from position N:

  • foot on the brake, release the parking brake,
  • select position R, D or M, then gradually release the brake pedal; the vehicle moves off immediately.

When the engine is idling with the brakes released, if position R, D or M is selected, the vehicle will move off even without pressing the accelerator.

Never leave children unattended inside the vehicle with the selector in R, D or M and the engine running, as the vehicle will move forward even without pressing the accelerator.

Ignition off, if the selector is not in position P, when the driver's door is opened, or after approximately 45 seconds, an audible signal sounds. Move the selector to P.

The audible signal stops.

When maintenance must be carried out with the engine running, apply the parking brake and select P (Park).

Adaptive driving program

Select D on the selector gate: the gearbox operates in adaptive mode, without any action on your part, taking the following factors into account:

  • driving style,
  • road profile
  • vehicle load.

For maximum acceleration without touching the selector, press the accelerator pedal fully (kickdown). The program will downshift automatically or hold the selected gear up to the engine's maximum speed.

When decelerating, the program downshifts automatically to provide effective engine braking.

Suddenly releasing the accelerator pedal does not have an immediate effect on vehicle speed.

Never select N while the vehicle is moving.

Never select P or R unless the vehicle is stopped.

Do not shift between positions to improve braking on a slippery road surface.

Sport and Snow programs

These are two specific programs.

The selected program is shown on the instrument cluster display.

Sport program

  • Press the S key. Once the vehicle is started in D, the adaptive program favours dynamic driving.

Snow program

This program makes starting off and traction easier when grip is low.

  • Press the buttonfois,
once the vehicle is started in D, the adaptive program adjusts vehicle behaviour to slippery road conditions.

You can cancel the Sport or Snow program at any time by pressing the selected key again.

Manual gear selection operation

  • Select M on the selector gate,
  • push the lever towards the + sign to shift up, and repeat as required,
  • pull the lever towards the - sign to shift down, and repeat as required.

You can switch from D (automatic mode) to M (manual mode) at any time.

A gear change is only made if the vehicle speed and engine speed allow it; otherwise, the automatic shift logic takes over temporarily.

When stopped or at very low speed, the gearbox automatically selects M1.

The S (sport) andsont inopérants en sélection manuelle(snow) programs
do not operate when a gear is selected manually.

Operation check

dans leAny malfunction
in operation is indicated by this warning light coming on, together with an audible signal and a message on the multifunction display.

In this case, the gearbox operates in limp-home mode (locked in 3rd gear). You may feel a strong jolt when changing from P to R and from N to R (this jolt is harmless to the gearbox).

Do not exceed 100 km/h or stay within local regulations.

Have it checked by the PEUGEOT network.

If the battery fails while the selector is in P, it will not be possible to move it to another position.

Above all, never force the selector, as this may damage the automatic gearbox.
