Driving tips

Driving in hilly terrain

~1min read
  • When driving up steep slopes, the vehicle may begin to slow down and lose power. In this case, shift to a lower gear so that the engine can operate again within its normal speed range. Shift gears quickly so that the vehicle does not lose momentum.
  • When driving down slopes, use the engine for braking by shifting to a lower gear (this applies to BOTH manual and automatic transmissions).
WARNING Avoid pressing the brake pedal for too long or too often when driving down a steep or long slope. This may cause the brakes to overheat, resulting in reduced braking effectiveness. Failure to observe these precautions may cause loss of vehicle control. NOTICE When driving down a slope, never turn the key to the "OFF" position. This may damage the emission control system and automatic transmission (if equipped).
