Common Causes of Corrosion
- Accumulation of salt, dirt, moisture or chemicals in hard-to-reach areas of the underbody.
- Chips, scratches and any other damage to painted or coated metal surfaces caused by minor collisions or impacts from stones and gravel.
Environmental Conditions That Accelerate Corrosion
- Road salt, dust-suppressing chemicals, sea air and industrial pollution accelerate metal corrosion.
- High humidity increases corrosion, especially when the temperature is slightly above freezing.
- Moisture remaining for a long time in some areas of the vehicle may cause corrosion even when other parts are completely dry.
- High temperatures accelerate corrosion of vehicle parts that are not well ventilated and therefore cannot dry quickly.
This information shows the need to keep the vehicle (especially the underbody) as dry and clean as possible. Equally important is prompt repair of any damage to the paint or protective coatings.
