Opening the fuel tank cap

To open the fuel tank cap, perform the following procedure:

Before refueling the vehicle

  • Close all doors and windows, and set the engine switch to "LOCK" (vehicles without smart entry and start system) or turn it off (vehicles with smart entry and start system).
  • Check the fuel type.

■ Fuel types EU area: Unleaded gasoline conforming to European standard EN228, with a RON octane rating of 95 or higher.

Except EU area: Unleaded gasoline with a RON octane rating of 95 or higher.

■ Using ethanol-blended gasoline in a gasoline engine Toyota allows the use of ethanol-blended gasoline when the ethanol content does not exceed 10%. Make sure the ethanol-blended gasoline you use has an adequate octane rating (RON).

WARNING

■ When refueling the vehicle Observe the following precautions when refueling the vehicle. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death.

  • After getting out of the vehicle and before opening the fuel filler door, touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity. It is important to discharge static electricity before refueling, as sparks caused by static electricity could ignite fuel vapor during refueling.
  • Always grip the handles on the fuel tank cap and turn it slowly to remove it.

A hissing sound may be heard when loosening the fuel tank cap. Wait for the hissing to stop before removing the cap completely. In high temperatures, pressurized fuel may spray out of the filler neck and cause injury.

  • It is important to prevent anyone who has not discharged static electricity from approaching the open fuel tank.
  • Do not inhale vaporized fuel.
  • Fuel contains substances that can be harmful if inhaled.

  • Do not smoke while refueling the vehicle.
  • Failure to observe this precaution could cause the fuel to ignite, resulting in a fire.

  • Do not return to the vehicle or touch people or objects that may be charged with static electricity.
  • Static electricity could build up, creating a risk of fire.

    ■ When refueling the vehicle To prevent fuel from overflowing from the tank, observe the following precautions:

    • Insert the fuel nozzle securely into the fuel tank filler neck.
    • Stop refueling after the fuel nozzle has shut off automatically with a click.
    • Do not top off the fuel tank.

    NOTE

    ■ Refueling Do not spill fuel while refueling.

Failure to observe this precaution could damage the vehicle, for example by causing the emission control system to malfunction or by damaging the fuel system components or the vehicle paint.
