Windshield wipers
Front Wiper
The wiper lever controls the wipers and the automatic wash/wipe function.

Fig. 79 Wiper lever
The wiper lever => fig. 79 can be placed in the following positions:
Single Wipe
- Push the lever down to position (1) if you want the wipers to sweep the windshield only briefly.
Intermittent wipe
Activating the
rain sensor*
- Move the lever up to detent (2).
- Move control (A) up or down to set the wiping speed.
On vehicles with a rain sensor*, move the control
up or down to adjust
the sensitivity of the rain sensor.
Slow Wipe
- Move the lever up to detent (3).
Fast Wipe
- Move the lever up to detent (4).
Automatic Wash/Wipe
- Pull the lever to position (5).
- Release the lever. The washer stops and the wipers continue to run for approximately another 4 seconds.
Switching the Wipers Off
Return the lever to the basic position.
.
General information
The wipers and the washer only work when the ignition is switched on.
When the vehicle is temporarily stationary, for example at a traffic light, the wiping speed is automatically reduced. On vehicles with a rain sensor*, intermittent wiping is automatically activated.
The washer nozzles are heated when the ignition is switched on.
In the various wiper operating positions, the wiping intervals are also controlled depending on vehicle speed.
When the headlights are on, only pull the wiper lever briefly to clean the windshield, otherwise the headlight washer* will also operate. This would result in unnecessary and excessive consumption of washer fluid from the washer fluid reservoir.
tion of washer fluid from the washer fluid reservoir.
Rain Sensor
The rain sensor* only works in the intermittent wiping position. In the event of sudden rain, intermittent wiping is automatically activated.
If the wiper lever is in the intermittent wiping position with the ignition switched off, the rain sensor is activated as soon as the vehicle speed reaches 6 km/h.
Control (A) is used to adjust the sensitivity of the rain sensor*.
The higher the sensitivity, the faster the wipers respond to moisture on the windshield.
The sensor sensitivity determines the wiping intervals, which also depend on vehicle speed.
CAUTION!
- Wiper blades in perfect condition are essential for good visibility and road safety - risk of accident!
- The rain sensor* is an assistance feature only. The driver must, however, always monitor the windshield and switch the wipers on manually depending on visibility.
Warning!
- In freezing conditions, before switching on the wipers for the first time, make sure the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield! If a wiper blade is blocked by ice, you could damage the wiper blade and the wiper motor!
- Before washing your vehicle in an automatic car wash, switch off the wipers (lever in basic position 0) to prevent them from being activated accidentally and being damaged.
Note
- Before setting off on a long journey, make sure the windshield washer fluid reservoir is full. Filling the reservoir
- Worn or dirty wiper blades can cause streaking and may impair the operation of the rain sensor*. Check the wiper blades regularly.
Rear wiper
The wiper lever also controls the rear wiper and the automatic wash/wipe function.

Fig. 80 Wiper lever
Proceed as follows to operate the rear wiper and the automatic wash/wipe system:
Intermittent wipe
- Push the wiper lever forward to the detent => fig. 80 (1). The rear wiper operates approximately every 4 seconds.
Automatic Wash/Wipe
- Push the lever fully forward to position (2) and hold it there for as long as the rear washer is operating.
- Release the lever. The wiper continues to operate for approximately 4 more seconds.
Switching off intermittent wiping
- Pull the lever back to its initial position.
When the front wiper is activated and you engage reverse gear, the rear wiper is activated.
CAUTION!
Wiper blades in perfect condition are essential for good visibility and road safety - risk of accident!
Warning!
In freezing conditions, check that the wiper blade is not frozen to the windshield before operating the wipers! If the wiper blade is blocked by ice, you may damage the wiper blade and the wiper motor!
Applies to vehicles: with headlight washers
Headlamp washer

Fig. 81 Headlight with washer nozzle extended
With the headlights switched on, select the automatic wash/wipe function, fig. 79 (5), by pulling the lever for more than one second.
To clean the headlights, the headlight washer nozzles extend from their housings in the bumper under the pressure of the washer fluid => fig. 81.
It is recommended to remove heavily caked dirt on the headlight lenses (such as insect residue) at regular intervals, for example when you stop at a fuel station.
To ensure correct operation in winter, clear snow from the nozzle holders and remove ice using an antifreeze spray.
Replacing the front wiper blades
Wiper blades in good condition ensure perfect visibility.

Fig. 82 Removing the wiper blade

Fig. 83 Attaching the wiper blade
Removing the wiper blade
- Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Push the wiper blade locking device in the direction of the arrow, fig. 82 (A). To do this, hold the wiper blade.
- Remove the wiper blade (b) from the attachment on the wiper arm.
Attaching the wiper blade
- Push the wiper blade locking device back. The wiper blade attachment is visible.
- Place the new wiper blade into the attachment on the wiper arm => fig. 83 (c).
- Push the wiper blade locking device in the direction of arrow (d) until it clicks audibly into the wiper arm.
- Lower the wiper arm onto the windshield.
CAUTION!
- Do not switch on the ignition when the wiper arms are raised! The wipers would return to the park position and damage the bonnet paint.
- To avoid streaking, clean the wiper blades regularly with a glass cleaner. If they are heavily soiled, e.g. by stuck-on insects, you may clean the wiper blades with a sponge or cloth - risk of accident!
- For safety reasons, it is recommended to replace the wiper blades once or twice a year.
Replacing the rear wiper blade

Fig. 84 Rear wiper: removing the wiper arm
Removing the wiper blade
- Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Grip the upper end of the wiper arm with one hand and the metal rod of the wiper arm with the other => fig. 84.
- Hold the wiper arm in the direction of arrow (A), then pull the blade in the direction of arrow (5) out of the attachment.
Attaching the wiper blade
- Align the wiper blade with the attachment.
- Hold the upper end of the wiper arm with one hand.
- With the other hand, push the wiper blade into the attachment.
- Lower the wiper arm onto the windshield.
CAUTION!
