This chapter describes the three central states of the BMW 5 (VII generation G30 & G31): idle state, accessory mode and ready to drive. It explains when and how the vehicle changes into the respective modes. The safety notes on leaving the vehicle and on child safety are particularly important. So you always know whether your BMW 5 Series is ready for operation, and what that means exactly.

Vehicle equipment

This chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional equipment offered in the model series. It therefore also describes equipment that is not available in a given vehicle, for example due to the selected optional equipment or country variant. This also applies to safety-related functions and systems. When using the corresponding functions and systems, observe the applicable laws and regulations.

General

Depending on the situation, the vehicle is in one of three states:

  • Idle state.
  • Accessory mode.
  • Ready to drive.

Idle state

Principle

When the vehicle is in idle state, it is switched off. All electrical consumers are deactivated.

General

Before opening from outside and after leaving and locking the vehicle, the vehicle is in idle state.

Safety notes

WARNING An unsecured vehicle can move on its own and roll away.

There is a risk of accident. Before leaving the vehicle, secure it against rolling away.

To make sure the vehicle is secured against rolling away, observe the following:

  • Apply the parking brake.
  • On inclines or downhill, turn the front wheels towards the curb.
  • On inclines or downhill, additionally secure the vehicle, e.g. with a wheel chock.

WARNING Unattended children or animals in the vehicle can set the vehicle in motion and endanger themselves or other road users, e.g. by the following actions:

  • Pressing the Start/Stop button.
  • Releasing the parking brake.
  • Opening and closing the doors or windows.
  • Engaging selector lever position N.
  • Operating vehicle equipment.

There is a risk of accident or injury.

Never leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle. When leaving the vehicle, take the remote control with you and lock the vehicle.

Idle state automatically

The idle state is established automatically under the following conditions:

  • After a few minutes, if the vehicle is not operated.
  • When the vehicle battery charge is low.
  • When one of the front doors is opened when leaving the vehicle, depending on the setting in iDrive.

During a telephone call, the idle state is not established automatically.

Establishing idle state when opening the front doors

Via iDrive:

  1. "My Vehicle"
  2. "Vehicle settings"
  3. "Doors/Keys"
  4. "Vehicle off after opening door"

Idle state manually

To establish idle state in the vehicle after the end of a trip:

Ruhezustand manuell

Press and hold the button until OFF in the instrument cluster goes out.

Accessory mode

Principle

With accessory mode switched on, most functions can be operated while the vehicle is stationary.

Desired settings can be made.

General

After opening the front doors, the vehicle is in accessory mode.

Display in the instrument cluster

OFF is shown in the instrument cluster. The drive is switched off and accessory mode is switched on.

Ready to drive

Principle

Switching on ready to drive corresponds to starting the engine.

General

Some functions, such as DSC, can only be operated when ready to drive is switched on.

For further notes on ready to drive, see page 104.

Switching on ready to drive

Ready to drive is switched on with the Start/Stop button:

  1. Depress the brake pedal.
  2. With manual transmission: depress the clutch pedal and engage neutral.
  3. Press the Start/Stop button.

The idle state, accessory mode and ready to drive states of the BMW 5 G30/G31 are central to safety and comfort in everyday use. Thanks to clear displays and intuitive operation, drivers can easily recognize the vehicle's current status and use it correctly.

The safety functions that prevent unintentional rolling away and simplify operation deserve particular mention. These well-considered details underline BMW's high standards for quality and safety.

This makes every journey in the BMW 5 G30/G31 not only comfortable but also particularly safe, whether in city traffic or on long distances.
