Fuel economy
Fuel consumption depends on many factors. Certain measures, an optimal driving style and regular maintenance help reduce fuel consumption and harmful effects on the environment.
Avoid unnecessary cargo
Excess cargo increases fuel consumption.
Avoid unnecessary equipment
Remove unused auxiliary mirrors, roof rack and rear luggage carrier. Additional attachments worsen the vehicle's aerodynamics and increase fuel consumption.
Keep windows and sunroof closed
Open windows and sunroof increase aerodynamic drag and therefore increase fuel consumption.
Check tire pressure regularly
Check tire pressure at least twice a month and each time before a long trip.
Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance, which increases fuel consumption and accelerates tire wear.
Start moving without delay
Do not warm up the engine at idle; start driving immediately at moderate engine speed. The engine will then reach operating temperature faster.
Drive with foresight
To avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking, maintain sufficient distance from vehicles ahead. Smooth, attentive driving helps save fuel.
Avoid high engine speeds
Driving at low engine speeds saves fuel and reduces wear on components and assemblies.
Coasting
In overrun mode, the fuel supply is cut off automatically.
Switch off the engine during long stops
During long stops, for example at a traffic light, at a railway crossing or in a traffic jam, switch off the engine.
Fuel is saved if the stop lasts at least 4 seconds.
Switch off unused functions
Energy-consuming functions, such as air conditioning or heated seats and rear window, increase fuel consumption. This is especially noticeable when driving in town with frequent stops. Therefore, do not switch these functions on unless necessary.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance extends the service life of the vehicle and makes its operation more economical. BMW AG recommends having it performed at a BMW service center. For information on the BMW maintenance system, see.
