Event Data Recorders
Vehicle Data Recording
This vehicle may be equipped with a module that records data during certain accidents or near-accident situations, such as airbag deployment or striking an object on the road. This data may help improve understanding of the circumstances in which accidents and injuries occur. Some of the data may relate to the operation of vehicle dynamics and safety systems.
The data may show:
- How various systems in the vehicle operated.
- Whether the driver's and front passenger's seat belts were fastened or not.
- How far the accelerator pedal and/or brake pedal was pressed by the driver, if at all.
- Vehicle speed.
This data may help improve understanding of the circumstances in which accidents and injuries occur. Data is recorded only during severe accidents. Under normal driving conditions, no data is recorded, and the module does not store any personal data. However, third parties, such as law enforcement, may combine the recorded data with other data that identifies the driver, which is normally collected during an accident investigation.
Special equipment and access to the vehicle or module are required to read the recorded data.
The recorded data may be read by the vehicle manufacturer and by third parties, such as law enforcement, using special equipment and with access to the vehicle or module.
GM will not access this data or share it with third parties, except in the following cases: with the consent of the vehicle owner or, in the case of leasing, the lessor; in response to an official request from the police or other government authorities; as disclosed in GM's defense in legal proceedings; or in cases required by applicable law. Data collected or received by GM may also be used for GM's research, or may be shared with third parties for research purposes where such a need is demonstrated, provided that the data used or shared does not allow identification of specific vehicles or their owners.
