Shift Lever

P = Park position, wheels are locked; may be selected only when the vehicle is stationary with the parking brake applied,

R = Reverse gear; may be selected only when the vehicle is stationary,

N = Neutral position,

D = Automatic mode with all gears.

In position P, the shift lever is locked. To move it, turn the ignition on, press the brake pedal, and press the lock release button.

To select P or R, press the button on the shift lever.

To start the engine, press the brake pedal with the selector in P or N.

Do not press the accelerator pedal when moving the shift lever. Never press the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time.

With a gear engaged, the vehicle begins to move slowly after the brake pedal is released.

Engine Braking

To use engine braking, for example on a downhill grade, shift to a lower gear in good time.

Rocking the Vehicle

Rock the vehicle only if it is stuck in sand, mud, or snow. Alternately shift the selector between D and R. Do not race the engine and avoid sudden acceleration.

Parking

Apply the parking brake, move the selector to P, and remove the ignition key.

The ignition key can be removed only when the shift lever is in P.
