STARTING AND OPERATING

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

~1min read

The Electric Power Steering system provides good vehicle response and improved maneuverability, and makes it easier to maneuver in tight spaces. The system will vary its assist to provide light effort during parking and a comfortable feel while driving. If the Electric Power Steering system experiences a fault that prevents it from providing assist, you will still be able to steer the vehicle manually.

If the Electric Power Steering warning light illuminates and the message "SERVICE POWER STEERING" or "POWER STEERING ASSIST OFF — SERVICE SYSTEM" appears in the instrument cluster display, this indicates that the vehicle must be taken to an authorized dealer for service.

NOTE:

  • Even if the power steering assist no longer operates, the vehicle can still be steered. Under these conditions, steering effort will be significantly increased, especially at low speeds and during parking maneuvers.
  • If the condition persists, have the vehicle serviced by an authorized dealer.

If the Electric Power Steering warning light illuminates and the message "POWER STEERING SYSTEM OVER TEMP" appears in the instrument cluster display, this indicates that extreme steering maneuvers may have caused the power steering system to overheat. When driving conditions are safe, stop and allow the vehicle to idle for several seconds, until the Electric Power Steering warning light and message turn off.
