STARTING AND OPERATING

ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS — 3.6L AND 5.7L

~1min read

For the powertrain (engine, transmission, clutch, and rear axle) of your new vehicle.

Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the first 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are preferred.

During driving, brief full-throttle acceleration within local traffic conditions is acceptable and promotes good break-in. However, acceleration at full throttle in a low gear may be harmful and should be avoided.

The engine oil, transmission fluid, and axle lubricant installed at the factory are high quality and energy-conserving. Replacement of oil, fluids, and lubricants should match the anticipated climate and operating conditions of the vehicle. Refer to the recommended viscosity grades and quality levels.

NOTE:

A new engine may consume some oil during the first few thousand miles (kilometers) of operation. This should be considered a normal part of break-in and not interpreted as an indication of a problem. Check the engine oil level with the engine oil dipstick frequently during the break-in period. Add oil as necessary.
