In an emergency

Starting the engine

~2min read
Starting with an auxiliary battery

If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started using a booster battery of the same or

slightly higher capacity than the discharged battery.

To start the engine, proceed as follows (fig. 1):

  • Connect the two positive terminals (marked +) of the two batteries with the corresponding cable;
  • Using the second cable, connect the negative terminal (-) of the booster battery to a ground pointon the engine or
    the transmission of the vehicle to be started;
  • Start the engine;
  • After the engine has started, disconnect the cables in reverse order.

If the engine does not start after several attempts, do not keep trying in vain; contact the Fiat service network.

Note: The two negative battery terminals must not be connected directly to each other, as any sparks could ignite the hydrogen gas released by the battery. If the booster battery is in another vehicle, make sure that metal parts do not accidentally make contact between that vehicle and the vehicle with the discharged battery.

Absolutely avoid
using battery quick chargers for emergency starting. This could damage the electronic systems, in particular the ignition and power supply electronics.Note

This jump-starting procedure must be carried out only by qualified personnel, as incorrect handling may produce a high-intensity electrical spark. Battery fluid is poisonous and corrosive; avoid contact with skin and eyes. In addition, do not bring open flames near the battery and avoid creating sparks.

Starting by towing, pushing, etc.

Starting the engine by push-starting, towing or rolling down a slope must be strictly avoided. In such cases fuel can enter the catalytic converter and irreparably damage it.

Note: The brake booster and power steering only work after the engine has started. Therefore, considerably more force than usual must be applied to the brake pedal and steering wheel.
