Battery charging

~2min read

NOTE Before disconnecting and then reconnecting the battery power supply, wait at least 1 minute after turning the ignition key to STOP and closing the driver's door.

WARNING A slow charge at low amperage for approximately 24 hours is recommended. Prolonged charging may damage the battery.

WARNING It is essential that the electrical system cables are reconnected correctly to the battery: the positive (+) cable to the positive terminal and the negative (–) cable to the negative terminal. The battery terminals are marked with the positive (+) and negative (–) symbols and are indicated on the battery cover. The cable terminals must also be free of corrosion.

WARNING If a "fast" charger is used with the battery installed in the vehicle, disconnect both vehicle battery cables before connecting the charger. Do not use a "fast" charger to provide starting voltage.

NOTE The battery charging procedure is described for information only. For this operation, it is recommended to contact the Fiat Service Network.

Versions without start&stop system

(depending on version/market, where fitted)

To charge the battery, proceed as follows:

  • disconnect the terminal from the negative battery terminal;
  • connect the charger cables to the battery terminals, observing the polarity;
  • switch on the charger;
  • when charging is complete, switch off the charger before disconnecting it from the battery;
  • reconnect the terminal to the negative battery terminal.

Versions with start&stop system

(depending on version/market, where fitted)

To charge the battery, proceed as follows:

  • disconnect connector A, fig. 128 (by pressing button B) from battery status monitoring sensor C installed on the negative battery terminal D;
  • connect the positive charger cable to the positive battery terminal E and the negative cable to the terminal of sensor D;
  • switch on the charger.
When charging is complete, switch off the charger;
  • after disconnecting the charger, reconnect connector A to sensor C.
  • WARNING 157) The liquid contained in the battery is poisonous and corrosive; avoid contact with skin and eyes. Battery charging must be carried out in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames or possible sources of sparks, to avoid the risk of explosion and fire.

    158) Do not attempt to charge a frozen battery: it must first be thawed, otherwise there is a risk of explosion. If the battery has frozen, have it checked by qualified personnel before charging, to verify that the internal elements are not damaged and that the case is not cracked, with the risk of leakage of poisonous and corrosive acid.
