  1. Follow the instructions supplied with the refrigerant identifier equipment to obtain a sample for testing. For the proper refrigerant analyzer,
Refer to: Climate Control Tools and Equipment (412-00 Climate Control System - General Information, General Procedures).
    • If the purity of R-134a or R-1234yf is 98% or higher by weight, the green PASS LED illuminates. Mass concentrations of R-1234yf, R-134a, R-12, R-22, hydrocarbons and air will be shown on the digital display.
    • If the R-134a or R-1234yf refrigerant does not meet 98% purity, the red FAIL LED illuminates and an alarm sounds to warn the user of a potential hazard. The mass concentrations of R-1234yf, R-134a, R-12, R-22 and hydrocarbons will be shown on the digital display.
    • If the hydrocarbon concentration is 2% or more by weight, the red FAIL LED illuminates, the digital display shows High Hydrocarbon Content, and an alarm sounds to warn the user of a potential hazard. The mass concentrations of R-1234yf, R-134a, R-12, R-22 and hydrocarbons will also be shown on the digital display.
  2. The percentage of air in the sample will be displayed if the R-134a or R-1234yf content is 98% or more. The refrigerant identifier excludes air when determining the refrigerant sample content because air is not considered a contaminant, although air may affect A/C system performance. When the refrigerant identifier determines that the refrigerant source is clean (R-134a or R-1234yf is 98% or higher by weight) and air concentration levels are 2% or more by weight, it will advise the user whether an air purge is required.
  3. If contaminated refrigerant is detected, repeat the Refrigerant Identification Test to confirm that the refrigerant is actually contaminated.
  4. NOTICE: If contaminated refrigerant is detected, DO NOT recover the refrigerant with R-134a or R-1234yf recovery/recycling equipment. Recovering contaminated refrigerant will contaminate the refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment and may damage the recovery/recycling equipment.

Recover the contaminated refrigerant using suitable recovery-only equipment designed to capture and store contaminated refrigerant only.
  5. Determine and correct the cause of the customer's original concern.
  6. Follow the A/C system flushing procedure.
Refer to: A/C System Flushing (412-00 Climate Control System - General Information, General Procedures).
  7. Dispose of the contaminated refrigerant in accordance with all federal, state and local regulations.
