Auto Start-Stop

~4min read

The system helps reduce fuel consumption by automatically stopping and restarting the engine when the vehicle is stopped. The engine restarts automatically when you release the brake pedal.

In certain situations your vehicle may restart automatically, for example:

  • To maintain interior comfort.
  • To charge the battery.

The Auto-Start-Stop system status can be viewed immediately in the information display. See Information Displays.

Enabling Auto-Start-Stop

The system automatically enables each time you start the vehicle if:

  • You have not pressed the Auto-Start-Stop button (indicator off).
  • Your vehicle exceeds the initial speed of 3 mph (5 km/h) after you first start your vehicle.
  • You have stopped your vehicle.
  • Your foot is on the brake pedal.
  • The driver's door is closed.
  • The interior has cooled or heated to an acceptable level.
  • The windshield defrost is off.
  • You have not turned the steering wheel too quickly or held it at a sharp angle.
  • The vehicle is not on a steep road grade.
  • The battery is in optimal operating condition (battery charge state and temperature within normal range).
  • The engine coolant temperature is close to operating temperature.
  • Altitude is below approximately 12,000 ft (3650 m).
  • Ambient temperature is moderate.
  • A trailer is not connected.
  • If you select Normal, Eco, Snow/Wet or Grass/Gravel/Snow modes.
  • You are not in 4H or 4L.
  • You have not selected manual gear shifting mode.
  • Hill Descent Control is not active.
  • You have not selected Tow/Haul, Sport, Sand or Mud/Ruts modes.

The green Auto-Start-Stop indicator in the instrument cluster illuminates to indicate when automatic engine stop occurs.

If the instrument cluster is equipped with a gray Auto-Start-Stop indicator, it illuminates when automatic engine stop is unavailable because one of the above conditions is not met.

Automatic Engine Restart

Any of the following conditions will cause the engine to restart automatically:

  • You release your foot from the brake pedal.
  • You press the accelerator pedal.
  • You press the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time.
  • The driver's seat belt is unfastened or the driver's door is open.
  • Your vehicle is moving.
  • The interior does not meet customer comfort requirements when air conditioning or heating is on.
  • Windows may fog when air conditioning is on.
  • The battery is not in optimal operating condition.
  • You have exceeded the maximum engine-off time.
  • The engine stopped automatically when the Auto-Start-Stop button was pressed.
  • The front defroster is set to maximum.
  • When you shift into Park (P), the engine will restart.

Any of the following conditions may cause the engine to restart automatically:

  • You increase the blower fan speed or change the climate control temperature.
  • An electrical accessory is turned on or connected.

Disabling Auto-Start-Stop

Press the Auto-Start-Stop button on the center console to turn the system off. The indicator illuminates. Deactivation using the button lasts for 1 ignition cycle only. Press the button again to restore Auto-Start-Stop function.

If your vehicle is in engine-off Auto-Start-Stop, shifting from Drive (D) to Reverse (R) will not restart the engine unless you press the brake pedal. The message Auto-Start-Stop Press Brake to Start Engine appears. You must press the brake pedal within 60 seconds, or the system will require you to shift to Park (P) and manually restart the vehicle.
