Child Restraint and Seatbelt Maintenance

~1min read

Periodically inspect the vehicle seatbelts and child restraint systems to make sure they operate properly and are not damaged. Inspect the vehicle and child restraint seatbelts for nicks, tears, or cuts. Replace as necessary. All vehicle seatbelt assemblies, including retractors, buckles, front seatbelt anchor assemblies, buckle anchor assemblies, sliding latch plate (if equipped), shoulder belt height adjusters (if equipped), shoulder belt guide on the seatback (if equipped), child restraint anchorages and tether anchors, and their attaching hardware must be inspected after a crash. For additional information, refer to the child restraint manufacturer's instructions for inspection and maintenance information related to the child restraint.

We recommend that all seatbelts in vehicles involved in a crash be replaced. However, if the crash was minor and an authorized dealer determines the belts are undamaged and continue to operate properly, replacement is not necessary. Seatbelt assemblies that were not in use during the crash must also be inspected and replaced if damage or improper operation is noted. For proper seatbelt care, refer to Vehicle Care.
