Pinpoint Test
PINPOINT TEST A: MAIN ENGINE COMPARTMENT BATTERY STATE TEST
Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms
Battery condition is determined by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals after applying a specified discharge current for a specified period of time.
Possible Sources
Main Battery
Wiring, Terminals or Connectors
Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
Inspect the wiring, terminals and connectors.
Inspect the main engine compartment battery.
Inspect the main engine compartment battery mounting.
Inspect the high-current connections at the BJB.
A1 CHECK THE MAIN ENGINE COMPARTMENT BATTERY STATE
With the diagnostic charger and battery cables disconnected from the battery, check the battery condition.
Is the battery OK?
Yes
RETURN the battery to service.
No
If the analyzer shows REPLACE BATTERY or REPLACE-BAD CELL, INSTALL a new battery. Refer to: Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Diagnosis and Testing).
PINPOINT TEST B: AUXILIARY BATTERY STATE TEST
Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms
Battery condition is determined by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals after applying a specified discharge current for a specified period of time.
Possible Sources
Auxiliary Battery
Wiring, Terminals or Connectors
Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
Inspect the wiring, terminals and connectors.
Inspect the auxiliary battery.
Inspect the auxiliary battery mounting.
Inspect the high-current connections at the BJB.
B1 CHECK THE AUXILIARY BATTERY STATE
Disconnect and remove the auxiliary battery and allow the battery to warm to room temperature. Refer to: Battery Disconnection and Connection (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).
Charge the auxiliary battery for 1 hour at 2 amps in AGM mode.
After charging the battery, remove the surface charge from the battery by connecting a conventional incandescent test lamp (not LED) for 5 minutes.
Allow the auxiliary battery to rest for 15 minutes.
Measure the auxiliary battery voltage.
Is the auxiliary battery voltage greater than 12 volts?
Yes
RETURN the battery to service.
No
INSTALL a new auxiliary battery. REFER TO: Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Diagnosis and Testing).
PINPOINT TEST C: B11D9:09
Normal Operation and Fault Symptoms
The BCM monitors both the main battery and the auxiliary battery. The main battery has a BMS, and the auxiliary battery has a battery current sensor. The BMS for the main battery communicates with the BCM over a dedicated LIN line. The battery current sensor for the auxiliary battery uses a PWM circuit that is connected to the BCM.

Trouble Code
Description
Fault Trigger Condition
BCM B11D9:09
Automotive Battery: Component Failures
Set in the BCM when the BMS detects a battery fault due to one of the following conditions.
Engine compartment main 12V battery failure
Engine compartment main 12V battery disconnected
Auxiliary 12V battery failure after 10 engine starts.
Open auxiliary battery fuse (in the high-current BJB)
Auxiliary battery fuse blown (attached to the auxiliary battery terminal).
Disconnected auxiliary 12V battery, set after 10 engine starts.
Possible Sources
Auxiliary Battery
Auxiliary battery fuses
Engine compartment main battery
Engine compartment main battery and auxiliary battery connections
Visual Inspection and Pre-checks
Check the auxiliary battery fuses.
C1 CHECK ALL BATTERY CABLE CONNECTIONS
Ignition OFF.
Inspect the engine compartment main 12V battery connections.
Inspect the auxiliary 12V battery connections.
Are all battery cable connections securely attached to the main and auxiliary batteries?
Yes
GO to C2
No
Tighten any loose battery cable connections to the battery.
C2 CHECK THE AUXILIARY BATTERY FUSE
Make sure the auxiliary battery fuses are good.
auxiliary battery fuse located in the high-current BJB
auxiliary battery fuse located on the positive terminal of the auxiliary battery
Are the auxiliary battery fuses good?
Yes
GO to C3
No
Make sure the battery cable is not shorted. If OK, INSTALL a new auxiliary battery fuse(s). If shorted, REPAIR or REPLACE the auxiliary battery cable as necessary.
C3 CHECK THE BATTERY CONDITION
Make sure the main battery and the auxiliary battery are in good condition. For the main battery, GO to Precise Pinpoint Test A. For the auxiliary battery, GO to Pinpoint Test B.
Does the engine compartment main battery and the auxiliary battery pass the battery condition check?
Yes
RETURN the battery to service. CLEAR the DTCs and RE-TEST the system.
No
If the tester shows REPLACE BATTERY or REPLACE-BAD CELL, or the battery condition check fails, INSTALL a new battery for the affected battery. REFER TO: Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Removal and Installation). or REFER TO: Auxiliary Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Removal and Installation).
