Fuel and Refueling

Safety Precautions

~2min read

When refueling, observe the following guidelines:

  • Before refueling, extinguish all smoking materials and any open flame near the vehicle.
  • Always turn off the engine before refueling.
  • WARNING: Automotive fuel can be harmful or fatal if swallowed. Fuel is very toxic and swallowing it can cause death or permanent injury. If fuel is swallowed, seek medical attention immediately, even if symptoms are not present. The toxic effects of fuel may not be apparent for several hours.
  • WARNING: Avoid breathing fuel vapor. Breathing fuel vapor can cause eye and respiratory tract irritation. In severe cases, excessive or prolonged inhalation of fuel vapor can cause serious illness and permanent injury.
  • WARNING: Avoid getting fuel in your eyes. If fuel gets in your eyes, immediately remove contact lenses (if worn), flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Failure to seek prompt medical attention may result in permanent eye damage.
  • WARNING: Fuel can be harmful if absorbed through the skin. If fuel spills on your skin, clothing, or both, immediately remove contaminated clothing and wash the skin thoroughly with soap and water. Repeated or prolonged skin contact can cause skin irritation.
  • WARNING: Use special caution if you are taking Antabuse or other forms of disulfiram for the treatment of alcoholism. Breathing fuel vapor may cause an adverse reaction, serious injury, or illness. Contact a physician immediately if you experience any adverse reactions.
