Activation

  1. Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
  2. If installing a new APIM, install the new APIM before performing the following procedure.
REFER TO: SYNC Module [APIM] (415-00B Information and Entertainment System - General Information - Vehicles With: AM/FM/CD/SYNC/Touchscreen, Removal and Installation).
    • This programming procedure deletes all phones that have been paired with the SYNC® system.
    • To prevent timeout errors and minimize programming time, a wired Internet connection is strongly recommended during programming.
    • A file of approximately 80 megabytes (MB) must be downloaded from the online database for programming. Allow additional time for the file to download.
    • A diagnostic scan tool is required.
      • Make sure the IDS version and software levels are up to date.
  3. Connect the battery charger to the vehicle and select the low charge setting. The negative charger lead must be connected to a clean chassis ground, not to the negative battery terminal.
  4. Connect the diagnostic scan tool to a power supply because of the duration of programming.
  5. Connect the diagnostic scanner to the VCM, and the VCM to the DLC.
  6. Connect one end of the APIM programming USB cable (4-pin Type A male to 4-pin Type A male) to the USB port on the diagnostic scanner, and the other end to the vehicle USB port. For vehicles with front and rear USB ports, use the front port (USB1).
Use standard equipment: SYNC USB 2.0 Male-to-Male Cable
  7. Close the IDS program.
  8. Turn the ignition to the ON/RUN position. For information on the ON/RUN position on vehicles with a push-button start,
REFER TO: Steering Wheel and Column Electrical Components - System Operation and Component Description (211-05 Steering Wheel and Column Electrical Components, Description and Operation).
    • Using the diagnostic scanner, open INTERNET EXPLORER and access the Service Publications website.
    • Start OASIS using "Read VIN and DTCs".
      • If the "Read VIN and DTCs" button is green with a red VCM icon, refer to the document "SYNC - Software Programming" in the Service Tips tab.
      • If the "Read VIN and DTCs" button is red with a gray VCM icon, make sure pop-ups are enabled, follow the INTERNET EXPLORER pop-up prompts, then refer to the document "SYNC - Software Programming" in the Service Tips tab.
    • If the "SYNC - Software Programming" document is not followed, programming may stop or encounter errors due to incorrectly configured Internet browser settings.
  9. On the OASIS tab, select the "SYNC" button. The last recorded status is displayed for the software.
    • Standard - used to update the APIM and any installed applications to the latest software levels.
    • Custom - used to display all available software options (including applications that may not have been installed previously) that can be programmed into the APIM. Use this selection when updates become available or as directed by a TSB or FSA.
    • Module Replacement - used when the APIM has been replaced. This type of programming performs the necessary initialization (software restore for newly installed hardware).
  10. Scroll down the screen, select one of 3 options (Standard, Custom or Module Replacement) and select "Read". Press the SYNC button. The VIN, current APIM build, VIP and CIP software levels are compared with the last recorded state in the Ford online database, and the available software is displayed.
  11. Press the "Program SYNC" button to start the APIM programming process.
  12. Follow the on-screen instructions of the diagnostic scan tool. When programming is complete, the diagnostic scan tool displays "Programming Successfully Completed".
