Stability Control

Principle of Operation

The system automatically turns on every time you switch the ignition on.

If a fault occurs in the stability control system or the traction control system, the following conditions may occur:

  • The Stability and Traction Control light stays on constantly.
  • The stability control and traction control systems do not improve your vehicle's ability to maintain wheel traction.

If driving conditions activate either Stability Control or Traction Control, you may experience the following conditions:

  • The Stability and Traction Control indicator flashes.
  • Your vehicle decelerates.
  • Engine power is reduced.
  • Vibration in the brake pedal.
  • The brake pedal is firmer than normal.
  • If driving conditions are severe and your foot is not on the brake pedal, the brake pedal may move when the system is activated, indicating higher braking force.

The stability control system has several features built in to help you maintain control of your vehicle:

Electronic Stability Control

The system enhances your vehicle's ability to prevent skidding or lateral sliding by applying the brakes to one or more individual wheels and, if necessary, reducing engine power.

Traction Control

The system enhances your vehicle's ability to maintain wheel traction by detecting and controlling wheel spin.

Using Stability Control

The system automatically turns on every time you switch the ignition on.

You cannot turn the stability control system off, but when you shift into reverse (R), the system is deactivated.

You can turn the traction control system off or on.
