Unique Driving Characteristics (if equipped)
The system helps reduce fuel consumption by automatically shutting off and restarting the engine when the vehicle is stopped. The engine restarts automatically when you release the brake pedal. In some situations, your vehicle may restart automatically, for example:
- To maintain cabin comfort
- To recharge the battery
The system automatically activates each time the vehicle is started if the following conditions are met:
- The Auto-Start-Stop button is not pressed (indicator off).
- Your vehicle exceeds an initial speed of 3 mph (5 km/h) after you first start the vehicle.
- Your vehicle is stopped.
- Your foot is on the brake pedal.
- The transmission is in Drive (D).
- The driver's door is closed.
- Brake vacuum is sufficient.
- The cabin has been cooled or heated to an acceptable level.
- The windshield defrost is off.
- The steering wheel is not being turned quickly or at a sharp angle.
- The vehicle is not on a steep road grade.
- The battery is within optimal operating conditions (battery state of charge and temperature within normal range).
- Engine coolant temperature.
- Altitude below approximately 12,000 ft (3,650 m).
- Ambient temperature is moderate.
The green Auto-Start-Stop indicator light in the instrument cluster illuminates to indicate when the engine is automatically stopped.
If the instrument cluster is equipped with a gray Auto-Start-Stop indicator light, it illuminates when automatic engine stop is unavailable because one of the above conditions is not met.
Automatic Engine Restart
Any of the following conditions will cause the engine to restart automatically:
- Your foot is released from the brake pedal.
- You press the accelerator pedal.
- You press the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time.
- The driver's seatbelt is unbuckled or the driver's door is open.
- The transmission is shifted into Reverse (R).
- Your vehicle is moving.
- The battery is not in optimal operating condition.
- The maximum engine-off time has been exceeded.
- When the Auto-Start-Stop button is pressed while the engine is stopped, the engine restarts automatically.
- The windshield defrost is on. Any of the following conditions may cause the engine to restart automatically:
- The fan speed is increased or the climate control temperature is changed.
- An electrical accessory is turned on or connected.
Disabling Auto-Start-Stop
Press the Auto-Start-Stop button, located in the center of the console, to turn off the system. The button will illuminate. The system will be deactivated for the current ignition cycle only. Press the button again to restore the Auto-Start-Stop function.
If your vehicle is in the Auto-Start-Stop state and you shift into Reverse without pressing the brake, a message prompting you to press the brake appears. You must press the brake pedal within 60 seconds, or you will need to shift into Park and restart the vehicle manually.
