AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Note: You may not be able to shift out of Park (P) if the Intelligent Access key is not inside your vehicle.

Understanding the Rotary Gear Shift Positions

Sport)

Ford Fusion. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Low (L)

Ford Fusion. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Your vehicle is equipped with an electronic rotary gear shift. The gear selector is located on the center console, below the climate control system.

To shift out of Park (P):

  1. Fully press and hold the brake pedal while shifting out of Park (P).
  2. Turn the outer ring of the gear selector clockwise from Park (P) until the desired gear is selected. The indicator illuminates on the gear selector. The instrument cluster also displays the currently selected gear.
  3. Release the brake pedal and the transmission remains in the selected gear.

Park (P)

When the transmission is in Park (P), your vehicle locks the transmission and prevents the wheels from rotating. Always come to a complete stop before shifting into and out of Park (P). A chime sounds as soon as you select Park (P).

When the ignition is turned off, your vehicle automatically shifts into Park (P). If the ignition is turned off while the vehicle is moving, it first shifts into Neutral (N) until a sufficiently low speed is reached, and then automatically shifts into Park (P).

Automatic Return to Park

Your vehicle has a function that automatically shifts your vehicle into Park (P) under any of the following conditions:

  • You turn off the vehicle.
  • You open the driver's door with your seatbelt unbuckled.
  • Your seat belt is unbuckled when the driver's door is open.

If you turn off the vehicle while driving, your vehicle first shifts into Neutral (N) until it decelerates sufficiently to shift automatically into Park (P).

Reverse (R)

When the selector is in Reverse (R), your vehicle moves backward. Always come to a complete stop before shifting into and out of Reverse (R).

Neutral (N)

When the selector is in Neutral (N), your vehicle can be started and can roll freely. Keep the brake pedal depressed in this position.

Stay in Neutral

Stay in Neutral mode allows your vehicle to remain in neutral when you exit the vehicle. Your vehicle must be stationary to enter this mode.

To enter Stay in Neutral mode:

  1. Turn the vehicle on, but do not start the engine.
  2. Place your foot on the brake pedal and turn the gear selector to Neutral (N).
  3. Press either the Low (L) or Sport (S) button in the middle of the gear selector to enter Stay in Neutral mode.

A message confirming that your vehicle is in Stay in Neutral mode appears on the display. The Neutral (N) indicator illuminates and the gear selector also flashes. To exit Stay in Neutral mode, place your foot on the brake pedal and turn the gear selector to Park (P).

Drive (D)

Drive (D) is the normal driving position for best fuel economy. The Overdrive feature automatically upshifts and shifts gears from first through sixth.

Level assist assistance, if equipped

Ford Fusion. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Press the Hill Descent Control button to activate Hill Descent Control. The Hill Descent Control indicator light appears in the instrument cluster when the system is active. Press the button again to turn it off.

Hill Descent Control:

  • Provides additional braking on a downhill grade by combining engine braking and high-voltage battery charging to help maintain vehicle speed when descending.
  • Because your vehicle determines the amount of engine braking and high-voltage battery charging, you may notice engine speed increase and decrease to help maintain vehicle speed on a descent.
  • The Hill Descent Control indicator light illuminates in the instrument cluster.

Sport (S) (if equipped)

Shifting the vehicle into Sport (S) mode:

  • Provides additional engine braking and extends the downshift range to improve performance when climbing hills, driving in hilly terrain or mountainous areas. This increases engine speed during engine braking.
  • Provides additional downshift operation through the automatic transmission shift strategy.
  • Provides quicker gear selection and operation at higher engine speeds.

Low (L) (if equipped)

  • Provides maximum engine braking.
  • The transmission can be shifted into Low (L) at any vehicle speed.
  • Not intended for use during prolonged or normal driving conditions and results in reduced fuel economy.

SelectShift™ Automatic Transmission (if equipped)

Your vehicle is equipped with the SelectShift Automatic Transmission. The SelectShift Automatic Transmission allows you to upshift or downshift as desired, without using the clutch.

To prevent the engine from running at too low an engine speed, which may cause stalling, SelectShift still automatically downshifts some gears if it determines that you have not shifted in time. Although SelectShift downshifts some gears for you, it still allows you to downshift at any time as long as SelectShift determines that engine damage will not occur from over-revving.

SelectShift does not automatically upshift even if the engine approaches the speed limit. Upshift manually by pressing the + button.

Pull the + paddle on the steering wheel to activate SelectShift.

  • Pull the right paddle shifter (+) to upshift.
  • Pull the left paddle shifter (–) to downshift.
Ford Fusion. SelectShift™ Automatic Transmission (If Equipped)

Select Shift on Drive (D):

  • Provides a temporary manual mode for more demanding maneuvers where additional gear control is required (for example, when towing or passing). This mode temporarily holds the selected gear for a period of time depending on driver inputs (for example, steering or accelerator pedal input).

SelectShift in Sport (S):

  • Provides permanent manual gear selection where full gear control is required.

To exit SelectShift mode, move the gear selector to another position (for example, Drive [D]).

Upshift to the recommended shift speeds according to the following chart:

Ford Fusion. SelectShift™ Automatic Transmission (If Equipped)

The instrument cluster displays your selected gear. If a gear is requested but not available due to vehicle conditions (low speed, engine speed too high for the requested gear selection), the current gear flashes three times.

Brake Shift Interlock Override

Use the Brake Shift Interlock Override to move your gear selector out of the Park position in the event of an electrical malfunction. If your vehicle battery is discharged, you need an external power source.

  1. Apply the parking brake and turn the ignition off before performing this procedure.
    Ford Fusion. Brake-Shift Interlock Override
  2. Locate the Brake Shift Interlock Override access slot. The slot is located in your storage compartment in the center console. The access slot is not labeled.
  3. Using a tool, press and hold the Brake Shift Interlock Override switch. The indicator in the rotary shifter flashes when the vehicle is in override mode.
  4. While still holding the override switch, rotate the selector to the Neutral position (N) to exit Park (P).
  5. Release the override button.
  6. Your vehicle remains in Neutral mode for towing by a tow truck, or you can shift into the desired gear and drive the vehicle (if possible).
  7. Release the parking brake.

Automatic Transmission Adaptive Learning. If your vehicle is stuck in mud or snow

Automatic Transmission Adaptive Learning

This feature can improve durability and provide consistent shift feel over the life of your vehicle. New vehicles or transmissions may have firm shifts, soft shifts, or both. This operation is considered normal and does not affect transmission function or durability. After some time, the adaptive learning process fully updates transmission shift operation.

If your vehicle is stuck in mud or snow

If your vehicle becomes stuck in mud or snow, you can rock it by shifting between Forward and Reverse, pausing between shifts to allow the transmission to engage. Apply light pressure to the accelerator pedal in each gear.
