How OnStar Service Works
Automatic Crash Response, Emergency Services, Crisis Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Remote Services, Roadside Assistance, and Hands-Free Calling are available on most vehicles. Not all OnStar services are available everywhere or on all vehicles. For more information, see the full description of OnStar Services, system limitations, and the OnStar Terms and Conditions, Privacy Statement, and Software License Terms:

OnStar or connected services may not work if the vehicle is not located in an area where OnStar has an agreement with a wireless provider in that area. The wireless provider must also have coverage, network capacity, reception, and technology compatible with OnStar or connected services. Services including vehicle location information may not work if GPS signals are not available, are obstructed, or are not compatible with OnStar hardware. OnStar or connected services may not work if OnStar equipment is not installed properly or has not been properly maintained. If equipment or software is added, connected, or modified, OnStar or connected services may not work. Other issues beyond OnStar control, such as hills, tall buildings, tunnels, weather, vehicle electrical system design and architecture, damage to the vehicle in a crash, or wireless network congestion or interference, may prevent service.
See Radio Frequency Statement.
Services for People with Disabilities
Advisors provide services to help with physical impairments and medical conditions.
Press
can help:
- Find a gas station with an attendant for refueling.
- Find a hotel, restaurant, etc. that meets accessibility requirements.
- Get directions to the nearest hospital or pharmacy in an urgent situation.
TTY Users
OnStar can communicate with customers who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired while in the vehicle. A dealer-installed TTY system can provide access to all OnStar services in the vehicle, except Virtual Advisor and OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation.
OnStar Personal Identification Number (PIN)
A PIN is required to access certain OnStar services. The PIN must be changed the first time you speak with an Advisor. To change the OnStar PIN, contact an OnStar Advisor by pressing
or call 1-888-4ONSTAR.
Warranty
OnStar equipment may be covered by the vehicle warranty.
Languages
The vehicle can be programmed to respond in several languages. Press
and ask for an Advisor. Advisors are available in English, Spanish, and French. Available languages may vary by country.
Possible Issues
OnStar cannot perform Remote Door Unlock or Stolen Vehicle Assistance after the vehicle has been turned off continuously for 10 days without an ignition cycle. If the vehicle has not been started for 10 days, OnStar may contact Roadside Assistance or a locksmith to help gain access to the vehicle.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
- GPS obstruction may occur in a large city with tall buildings; in parking garages; near airports; in tunnels and underpasses; or in an area with very dense trees. If GPS signals are unavailable, the OnStar system should still work to call OnStar. However, OnStar may have difficulty identifying the exact location.
- In emergency situations, OnStar can use the last stored GPS location to send to emergency responders.
Temporary loss of GPS may cause loss of the ability to send a turn-by-turn navigation route. The Advisor may give verbal directions or may ask you to call back after the vehicle has moved to an open area.
Cellular and GPS Antennas
Cellular service is required for OnStar to send remote signals to the vehicle. Do not place objects on or near the antenna to prevent blocking of cellular signal and GPS reception.
Unable to connect to OnStar message.
This message may appear if there is limited cellular coverage or if the cellular network has reached maximum capacity. Press
try calling again or retry after driving a few miles to another cellular coverage area.
Vehicle and Power Related Issues
OnStar services require the vehicle electrical system, wireless communication, and satellite GPS technologies to be available and operating for the features to function properly. These systems may not operate if the battery is discharged or disconnected.
Add-On Electrical Equipment
The OnStar system is integrated into the vehicle electrical architecture. Do not add electrical equipment. Refer to Additional Electrical Equipment. Added electrical equipment may interfere with OnStar system operation and cause it to become inoperative.
Vehicle Software Updates
OnStar or GM may remotely deliver software updates or changes to the vehicle without prior notice or consent. These updates or changes may improve or maintain the safety, security, or functionality of the vehicle or vehicle systems. Software updates or changes may affect or erase data or settings stored in the vehicle, such as OnStar Hands-Free calling names tags, stored navigation destinations, or preset radio stations. Neither OnStar nor GM is responsible for any affected or erased data or settings. These updates or changes may also collect personal information. Such collection is described in the OnStar Privacy Statement or disclosed separately at the time of installation. These updates or changes may also cause the system to automatically communicate with GM servers to collect vehicle system status information, determine whether updates or changes are available, or deliver updates or changes. An active OnStar agreement constitutes consent to these software updates or changes and agreement that either OnStar or GM may remotely deliver them to the vehicle.

The complete OnStar Privacy Statement can be found at www.onstar.com (USA) or www.onstar.ca (Canada). We recommend that you review it. If you have questions, call 1-888-4ONSTAR (1-888-466-7827) or press
