Infant Safety

Types of Child Restraints
Infants up to one year old should be transported in special rear-facing child seats or infant carriers suited to the infant's weight and height.
Only rear-facing child restraints provide proper protection for an infant's head, neck, and back.
Two types of child restraints are permitted: child restraints designed exclusively for infants, or adjustable child restraints in which the child faces rearward at an incline.
For a list of child restraints recommended for use in European countries, refer to page 56.
Do not install a rear-facing child restraint in a forward-facing position.
In this position, the child may be seriously injured in a frontal collision.
Installing a Rear-Facing Child Restraint
A special rear-facing child restraint can be installed in any rear seat position, but not in the front passenger seat.
Do not install a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat.
For a list of rear-facing child restraints recommended for use in European countries that can be installed in any rear seat position, refer to page 56.
In the event of a collision, the rapidly inflating airbag cushion may strongly displace the child restraint, which may result in the child being killed or seriously injured.
A properly installed rear-facing child restraint may prevent the driver and front passenger from moving their seats as far back as recommended or from locking the seats in the desired position.
In such cases, it is recommended to install the child restraint in the rear seat directly behind the front passenger seat, which should be moved as far forward as possible and left unoccupied. You may also purchase a smaller forward-facing child restraint.
Do not install a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat, since in a vehicle accident the rapidly inflating airbag cushion may cause the child's death or serious injury.
Install a rear-facing child restraint in the rear seat, not in the front seat.
In accordance with the requirements of UNECE Regulation No. 94:

If the vehicle is equipped with a front passenger airbag, do NOT install a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat.
In the event of a collision, the inflating airbag cushion may strike the child restraint with great force. The airbag may abruptly displace the child restraint and the child, which may result in very serious injury to the child.
