Drive Mode

~4min read

The drive mode can be selected according to the driver's preference or road conditions.

Information

If there is a problem with the instrument cluster, the drive mode will remain in COMFORT mode and cannot be changed to NORMAL or SPORT mode.

The mode changes each time the DRIVE MODE button is pressed.

COMFORT mode provides smooth driving and a comfortable ride.

When NORMAL mode is selected, no indicator is displayed on the instrument cluster.

  • Normal mode: NORMAL mode provides smooth driving and a comfortable ride.
  • SPORT mode: SPORT mode provides a sporty but stable ride.

The drive mode will change to NORMAL mode when the engine is restarted. However, this does not apply when in SMART mode. SMART mode will be maintained as selected when the engine is restarted.

If you change the drive mode setting of the integrated drive mode control system, the SCC response of the Smart Cruise Control will also change. (if equipped)

SPORT Mode

SPORT mode enhances driving dynamics by automatically adjusting steering effort, engine, and transmission control logic for improved driver performance.

  • When SPORT mode is selected using the DRIVE MODE button, the SPORT indicator will illuminate.
  • Whenever the engine is restarted, the drive mode will return to NORMAL mode. If SPORT mode is desired, select SPORT mode again using the DRIVE MODE button.
  • When SPORT mode is activated:
-- Engine speed will tend to remain high for a certain period of time even after the accelerator pedal is released.
-- Upshifts are delayed when accelerating.

Information

Fuel economy may decrease in SPORT mode.

SMART Mode

SMART mode selects the appropriate drive mode among ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT by evaluating the driver's driving habits (such as economical or aggressive (sporty)) from brake pedal application or steering wheel operation.

  • Press the DRIVE MODE button to select SMART mode. When SMART mode is selected, the indicator illuminates on the instrument cluster.
  • SMART mode automatically controls vehicle driving, such as shift pattern and engine torque, according to the driver's driving habits.
  • Whenever the engine is restarted, the drive mode remains in SMART mode.

Information

  • When you drive the vehicle gently in SMART mode, the drive mode switches to SMART ECO mode to improve fuel efficiency. However, actual fuel economy may vary depending on your driving conditions (i.e., uphill/downhill, vehicle deceleration/acceleration).
  • When you drive the vehicle dynamically in SMART mode, such as sudden deceleration or sharp cornering, the drive mode changes to SMART SPORT mode. However, this may adversely affect fuel economy.

Various driving conditions you may encounter in SMART mode

  • The drive mode automatically changes to SMART ECO mode after a certain period of time when you depress the accelerator pedal gently (your driving is classified as economical).
  • The drive mode automatically changes from SMART ECO mode to SMART NORMAL mode after a certain period of time when you depress the accelerator pedal suddenly or continuously.
  • The drive mode automatically changes to SMART NORMAL mode with the same driving pattern when the vehicle starts climbing a hill at a certain angle. The drive mode automatically returns to SMART ECO mode when the vehicle returns to a level road.
  • The drive mode automatically changes to SMART SPORT when you accelerate the vehicle rapidly or steer the steering wheel repeatedly (your driving is classified as sporty). In this mode, your vehicle downshifts during rapid acceleration/deceleration and increases engine braking performance.
  • You may still feel engine braking even when you release the accelerator pedal in SMART SPORT mode. This is because your vehicle remains in a lower gear for a certain period of time for the next acceleration. Therefore, this is a normal driving condition and does not indicate any malfunction.
  • The drive mode automatically changes to SMART SPORT mode only in severe driving conditions. In most common driving conditions, the drive mode is set to either SMART ECO mode or SMART NORMAL mode.

SMART Mode Limitation

SMART mode may be limited in the following situations. (The OFF indicator illuminates in these situations.)

  • Cruise control activated: The cruise control system may deactivate SMART mode when the vehicle is controlled by the Smart Cruise Control system. (SMART mode is not deactivated simply by activating the cruise control system.)
  • Transmission fluid temperature is either extremely low or extremely high: SMART mode may be active in most common driving conditions. However, extremely high/low transmission fluid temperature may temporarily deactivate SMART mode because the transmission condition is outside normal operating conditions.
