Driving Your Vehicle

Using ABS

~2min read

To get the maximum benefit from your ABS in an emergency, do not attempt to modulate brake pressure and do not pump the brakes. Press the brake pedal as hard as possible.

When you apply the brakes under conditions that may cause the wheels to lock, you may hear brake noise or feel a pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and indicates that your ABS is operating.

ABS does not reduce the time or distance required to stop the vehicle.

Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you.

ABS cannot prevent skidding caused by sudden changes in direction, such as attempting to take a corner too fast or a sudden lane change. Always drive at a speed and in a manner appropriate for the road and weather conditions.

ABS cannot prevent loss of directional stability. Always keep the steering wheel moderately steady when braking hard. Sharp or abrupt steering may cause your vehicle to swerve into oncoming traffic or leave the road.

On loose or uneven road surfaces, the operation of the anti-lock braking system may increase braking distance compared with vehicles equipped with a conventional brake system.

ABS warning light () will stay on for a few seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON. During this time the ABS performs a self-check, and the light turns off if everything is normal. If the light remains on, there may be a problem with the ABS. Contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

If the ABS warning light ( ) comes on and stays on, there may be a problem with the ABS. Your conventional brakes will still function normally. To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, have the system checked by a HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

CAUTION

When driving on a road with poor traction, such as an icy road, and applying the brakes continuously, the ABS will remain active continuously and the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate. Pull the vehicle over to a safe location and turn the engine off.

Restart the engine. If the ABS warning light does not remain on, the ABS is operating normally.

Otherwise, there may be a problem with your ABS. Contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

Information

When you start your vehicle because of a discharged battery, the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate at the same time. This is caused by low battery voltage and does not mean the ABS is malfunctioning. Charge the battery before driving the vehicle.
