Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)

~2min read

The Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. It helps keep the vehicle stable during rapid acceleration, sudden braking, and cornering on wet, slippery, and uneven roads, where tire traction may suddenly change.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions when using the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system:

  • ALWAYS check your speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead. VSM does not replace safe driving practices.
  • Never drive too fast for road conditions. The VSM system will not prevent accidents. Excessive speed in bad weather, on slippery or uneven roads can lead to serious accidents.

VSM Operation

VSM Operating Status

VSM operates when:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is turned on.
  • Vehicle speed is above approximately 15 km/h on curved roads.
  • Vehicle speed is above approximately 20 km/h when braking on uneven road surfaces.

During Operation

When you depress the brake pedal under conditions that may activate ESC, you may hear noises from the brakes or feel a corresponding sensation in the brake pedal. This is normal and indicates that your VSM is active.

NOTICE

VSM does not operate when:

  • Driving on a sloped road, such as a grade or incline.
  • Driving in reverse.
  • The ESC OFF indicator is on.
  • The EPS (Electronic Power Steering) warning light ( ) is on or flashing.

WARNING

If the ESC indicator () or the EPS warning light ( ) remains on or flashes, your vehicle may have a malfunction in the VSM system. When the warning light illuminates, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

Driving with wheels and tires of different sizes may cause the ESC system to malfunction. Before replacing tires, make sure all four tires and wheels are of the same size. Never drive the vehicle with tires and wheels of different sizes installed.
