Seat Belt Pretensioner (Driver and Front Passenger)

~3min read

Retractor Pretensioner

Your vehicle is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners. The purpose of the pretensioners is to ensure that the seat belts fit snugly against the occupant's body in certain frontal collisions. Seat belt pretensioners may be activated in frontal collisions severe enough to deploy the airbags.

If the system detects excessive tension on the driver's or passenger's seat belt when the pretensioner is activated, the load limiter inside the pretensioner will release some pressure on the seat belt.

When the vehicle stops suddenly or if a passenger attempts to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor locks in position. In certain frontal collisions, the pretensioner activates and tightens the seat belt against the occupant's body.

EFD (Driver and Front Passenger) System

The purpose of the EFD (Emergency Fastening Device) system is to ensure that the lap belt fits snugly against the lower body of the occupant in certain frontal collisions. The EFD (Emergency Fastening Device) may be activated in collisions severe enough to deploy the airbags.

WARNING

Seat belt pretensioners (retractor pretensioner and Emergency Fastening Device) may not protect you properly in an accident. Observe the following precautions:

  • Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
  • Do not use a seat belt that is loose or twisted. A loose or twisted seat belt will not protect you properly in an accident.
  • Do not place anything near the buckle. This may adversely affect the buckle and cause it to malfunction.
  • Always replace the pretensioners after activation or an accident.
  • NEVER inspect, service, repair, or replace the pretensioners yourself. This must be done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
  • Do not strike the seat belt assemblies.

WARNING

Do not touch the seat belt pretensioner (retractor pretensioner and Emergency Fastening Device) assemblies for several minutes after they have been activated. When the seat belt pretensioner (retractor pretensioner and Emergency Fastening Device) mechanism is activated in a collision, the pretensioner becomes hot and may burn you.

CAUTION

Body work on the front of the vehicle may damage the seat belt pretensioner (retractor pretensioner and Emergency Fastening Device) system. Therefore, we recommend that the system be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

The seat belt pretensioner system consists mainly of the following components. Their locations are shown in the illustration above:

1. SRS Airbag Warning Light

2. Retractor Pretensioner

3. SRS Control Module

4. Emergency Fastening Device (EFD)

✽ NOTICE

The sensor that activates the SRS airbag is connected to the seat belt pretensioner. The SRS airbag warning light on the instrument panel will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds after the engine start/stop button is turned to the ON position, and then it should turn off.

If the seat belt pretensioner is not functioning properly, the warning light will illuminate even if there is no malfunction in the SRS airbag. If the warning light does not illuminate, remains illuminated, or flashes while driving, have the seat belt pretensioner and SRS airbag system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

✽ NOTICE

  • The seat belt pretensioners for both the driver and front passenger may be activated in certain frontal or side collisions, or in a rollover.
  • The pretensioners will not be activated if the seat belts are not fastened at the time of a collision.
  • When the seat belt pretensioners are activated, a loud noise may be heard and fine dust, which may resemble smoke, may be visible in the passenger compartment. These are normal operating conditions and are not hazardous.
  • Although it is non-toxic, the fine dust may cause skin irritation and should not be breathed for extended periods. Wash all exposed skin thoroughly after an accident in which the seat belt pretensioners have been activated.
