PTC HEATER Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

A PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heater is installed at the outlet or at the rear of the heater core. The PTC heater is an electric heater that uses a PTC element as an auxiliary heat source, which compensates for the lack of internal heat source in the diesel engine and is highly efficient. The electric heating system heats the passenger compartment by heating the direct air from the heater. As the name suggests, the resistance of the proportional element is sensitive to changes in temperature.
Operating Principle: The ECM outputs the PTC ON signal and activates PTC relay 1. The heater controller controls PTC relay 2 and PTC relay 3 at 15-second intervals. However, PTC relay 3 can operate when the battery voltage is above 12.4 V. The PTC heater operates under the following conditions:
  • Battery voltage: 12.4 V or more
  • Blower motor: operating
  • Ambient and Coolant Temperature
