Airbag Deployment Conditions

~1min read

Front Airbags

Front airbags are designed to deploy in a frontal collision. Depending on the severity, speed, or angle of the frontal impact, the point of impact is usually in an area slightly left or right of the centerline.

Side Airbags and Curtain Airbags

'

Side airbags and side curtain airbags deploy in a collision. Deployment is determined by the side impact sensors, depending on the force, speed, or angle of the impact.

Although the driver and front passenger front airbags are designed to deploy only in a frontal collision, they may also deploy in other types of impacts if the front impact sensors detect a sufficiently severe impact. Side airbags and curtain airbags are not designed to deploy only in a side collision. However, they may deploy in other situations if the side impact sensors detect a sufficient impact.

If the vehicle underbody strikes a bump or an object in the road, or the road is in poor condition, the airbags are likely to deploy. To avoid accidental airbag deployment, drive carefully on rough roads or off-road areas not intended for traffic.
