Seat Belt Precautions

~2min read

Always fasten your seat belt and make sure all passengers fasten their seat belts before starting the trip. Airbags (if equipped) are designed to supplement the seat belts as an additional safety device, but they are in no way a replacement for them. In most countries, all occupants of the vehicle are required to wear seat belts.

WARNING

All occupants must be properly secured with seat belts at all times while the vehicle is in motion. When adjusting and wearing the seat belt, observe the following precautions:

  • We strongly recommend that you ALWAYS properly secure children up to 13 years old in the rear seats.
  • If a child over 13 years old must sit in the front seat, it must be properly secured, and the seat should be moved as far back as possible.
  • NEVER allow children or infants to ride on a passenger's lap.
  • NEVER sit behind the wheel with the seatback reclined while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Never allow more than one child to use one seat belt at the same time.
  • Never place the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back.
  • Never secure fragile objects with the seat belt. In a collision or sudden braking, this may damage them.
  • Do not use the seat belt if it is twisted. A twisted seat belt will not properly protect you in an accident.
  • Do not use the seat belt if the webbing or material is damaged.
  • Do not secure the seat belt in other locations or anchors.
  • NEVER unbuckle the seat belt while the vehicle is moving. This may cause loss of vehicle control and result in an accident.
  • Make sure nothing in the buckle interferes with the seat belt locking mechanism. This may prevent the seat belt from restraining you securely.
  • To eliminate belt slack, do not modify or add any parts that would interfere with the operation of the seat belt adjustment mechanism.

WARNING

Seat belts and seat belt assemblies that are damaged or do not operate properly. Always replace:

  • if the webbing is worn, contaminated or damaged.
  • if the buckle is damaged.
  • The entire seat belt assembly if it was buckled during a crash, even if damage to the assembly or belts is not obvious.
