Seat Belt Precautions
In this manual: Your Vehicle's Safety System
~2min read
Always fasten your seat belt and make sure all occupants have fastened their seat belts before starting any trip. Airbags are designed to supplement seat belts as a supplemental restraint, but they are not a replacement for them. In most countries, all vehicle occupants are required to wear seat belts.
WARNING
ALL passengers MUST use seat belts whenever the vehicle is moving. Observe the following precautions when adjusting and fastening seat belts:
- Children under 13 years old must be properly restrained in the rear seats.
- Never allow children to ride in the front passenger seat unless the airbag is turned off. If a child is seated in the front passenger seat, move the seat as far back as possible and properly restrain them in the seat.
- NEVER allow an infant or child to ride on a passenger's lap.
- NEVER ride with the seatback reclined while the vehicle is moving.
- Do not allow children to share a seat or seat belt.
- Do not wear the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back.
- Never route the seat belt over fragile objects. In the event of a sudden stop or collision, the seat belt may damage them.
- Do not use a seat belt that is twisted. A twisted seat belt will not properly protect you in a crash.
- Do not use a seat belt if the webbing or hardware is damaged.
- Do not fasten the seat belt buckle to the buckles of other seats.
- NEVER unfasten the seat belt while driving. This may cause loss of vehicle control resulting in a crash.
- Make sure the buckle does not interfere with the seat belt latch mechanism. This may prevent the seat belt from latching securely.
- No modifications or additions should be made by the user that would prevent the seat belt adjustment devices from operating, remove slack, or prevent the seat belt assembly from adjusting to take up slack.
WARNING
Seat belts and seat belt assemblies that are damaged or do not operate properly must be replaced. Always replace:
- Webbing that is worn, dirty, or damaged.
- Damaged hardware.
- Replace the entire seat belt assembly after it has been worn in an accident, even if no webbing or assembly damage is obvious.
