Actions to take in an emergency

Starting with Jumper Cables

~2min read

Jump starting from an external power source can be dangerous if performed incorrectly. Follow the procedure described in this section to avoid injury or damage to your vehicle. If you are unsure what to do, we recommend calling a technician or a towing service.

WARNING

To avoid SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH, observe the following instructions when near or working with the battery:

Read and follow the battery handling instructions.

Wear protective goggles specifically designed to protect your eyes from acid splashes.

Keep the battery away from open flames, sparks, or heat sources.

Battery cells always contain hydrogen, a flammable gas that can explode when ignited.

Keep the battery out of the reach of children.

Batteries contain highly corrosive sulfuric acid. Acid must not contact the eyes, skin, or clothing.

If acid gets into your eyes, flush them with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately. If acid contacts your skin, wash the affected area thoroughly. If you feel pain or burning, seek medical attention immediately.

  • When lifting a battery with a plastic case, excessive pressure on the case may cause acid to leak. Use a battery carrier or place your hands on both sides of the battery.
  • Do not attempt to jump start the vehicle if the battery is frozen.
  • NEVER attempt to charge the battery while the cables are connected.
  • The electric starting system operates at high voltage. NEVER touch these components when the engine is running or when the engine START/STOP button is in the ON position.
  • Do not allow the jumper cables (+) and (-) to contact each other, as this may cause sparks.
  • If you attempt to start the engine with jumper cables from an external power source when the battery is weak or frozen, it may crack or explode.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the vehicle:

  • Use only a 12 V power source (battery or cables) to start the vehicle.
  • Do not attempt to start the vehicle by pushing it.

Information

Failure to follow battery disposal regulations may harm the environment and human health. Dispose of the battery in accordance with applicable laws or regulations.
