Driver Assistance System

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist Operation

~5min read

Main Function

The main function of the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system is to warn the driver and, if necessary, control the vehicle to reduce the effects of a collision. The following warning messages may be displayed depending on the collision risk level.

  • To warn the driver of a possible collision, the "Collision Warning" message appears on the instrument cluster and an audible warning sounds.
  • If a vehicle is detected ahead, the function operates when your vehicle speed is between approximately 6-112 mph (10-180 km/h).
  • If a pedestrian or cyclist is detected ahead, the function operates when your vehicle speed is between approximately 6-53 mph (10-85 km/h).
  • If "Active Assist" is selected, braking assistance may be provided.

Emergency Braking

  • To warn the driver of an emergency braking situation, the "Emergency Braking" warning message appears on the instrument cluster and an audible warning sounds.
  • If a vehicle is detected ahead, the function operates when your vehicle speed is approximately 6-47 mph (10-75 km/h).
  • If a pedestrian or cyclist is detected ahead, the function operates when your vehicle speed is between approximately 6-40 mph (10-65 km/h).
  • In an emergency braking situation, the braking assist function applies strong braking force to help prevent a collision with a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist ahead.

Vehicle Stop and Brake Control Release

  • When the vehicle is stopped by emergency braking, the "Drive Carefully" warning message appears on the cluster. For your safety, the driver must immediately depress the brake pedal and check the surroundings.
  • Braking control ends approximately 2 seconds after the vehicle is stopped by emergency braking.

Junction Turning Function

The Junction Turning function warns and helps control the vehicle depending on the risk of collision: "Collision Warning", "Emergency Braking", and "Stop" vehicle and cancellation of brake control.

  • To warn the driver of a possible collision, the "Collision Warning" message appears on the instrument cluster and an audible warning sounds.
  • The function operates when your vehicle speed is between approximately 6-19 mph (10-30 km/h) and the speed of the oncoming vehicle is between approximately 19-44 mph (30-70 km/h).
  • If "Active Assist" is selected, braking assistance may be provided.

Emergency Braking

  • To warn the driver of an emergency braking situation, the "Emergency Braking" warning message appears on the instrument cluster and an audible warning sounds.
  • The function operates when your vehicle speed is between approximately 6-19 mph (10-30 km/h) and the speed of the oncoming vehicle is between approximately 19-44 mph (30-70 km/h).
  • In an emergency braking situation, the function assists braking with strong braking force to help prevent a collision with the oncoming vehicle.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions when using Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist:

  • For safety, change the settings after parking the vehicle at a safe location.
  • When "Active Assist" or "Warning Only" is selected, pressing and holding the ESC OFF button turns off Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist automatically. In this case, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist cannot be adjusted from the Settings menu, and the indicator light illuminates on the instrument cluster. This is normal. If ESC is turned on by pressing the ESC OFF button, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist will retain the last setting.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist does not operate in all situations or may not avoid all collisions.
  • The driver must remain responsible for vehicle control. Do not rely solely on Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. Instead, maintain a safe braking distance and press the brake pedal as needed to reduce speed or stop the vehicle.
  • Never intentionally use Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist to strike people, animals, objects, etc. This may cause serious injury or death.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate if the driver presses the brake pedal to avoid a collision.
  • Depending on the road and driving conditions, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist system may warn the driver late or may not warn the driver.
  • During Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist operation, the vehicle may stop suddenly, causing occupants to be thrown forward and unsecured objects to move. Always fasten your seat belt and keep cargo secured.
  • If another system's warning message is displayed or a warning sound is generated, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist warning message may not be displayed and the warning sound may not be generated.
  • You may not hear the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist warning sound if there is a lot of noise around you.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may turn off, or may not operate properly, or may operate differently depending on road and surrounding conditions.

WARNING

  • Even if there is a problem with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, the basic braking performance of the vehicle will operate normally.
  • During emergency braking, the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist braking control is automatically canceled when the driver excessively presses the accelerator pedal or steers the vehicle sharply.

PLEDGE

  • Depending on the condition of the vehicle and pedestrian ahead and the surroundings, the speed range for operation of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may be reduced. Head-on collision-avoidance assist may only warn the driver, otherwise it may not operate.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist will operate under certain conditions by evaluating the risk level based on the condition of the vehicle ahead, direction of travel, speed, and surroundings.

Information

  • In a situation where a collision is unavoidable, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist may assist braking if the driver applies insufficient braking.
  • Images and colors on the instrument cluster may differ depending on the cluster type or the theme selected on the cluster.
