If the engine overheats
If your temperature gauge indicates overheating, you experience a loss of power, or you hear a loud knocking or pinging noise, the engine may be overheating. If this happens, you should:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe.
2. Shift the transmission to P (Park) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioner is ON, turn it OFF.
3. If engine coolant is leaking under the vehicle or steam is coming from the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the coolant has stopped leaking or the steam has stopped. If no coolant loss or steam is visible, leave the engine running and check that the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan does not operate, turn off the engine.
WARNING
While the engine is running, keep hands, clothing and tools away from moving parts such as the cooling fan and drive belt to prevent serious injury.
4. Check for coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses, or under the vehicle. (If the air conditioner has been in use, it is normal for cold water to drip from it when you stop.)
5. If engine coolant is leaking, stop the engine immediately and call the nearest authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
WARNING
Never remove the engine coolant reservoir cap and/or the water-cooled intercooler coolant cap or drain plug while the engine and radiator are hot.
Hot coolant and steam can be expelled under pressure, which may cause serious injury.
Turn off the engine and wait for it to cool down. Be extremely careful when removing the coolant reservoir cap. Wrap it with a thick towel and turn it slowly counterclockwise to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are sure all pressure has been released, press down on the cap using a thick towel and continue turning counterclockwise to remove it.
6. If you cannot find the cause of overheating, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant was lost, carefully add coolant to the reservoir until the level reaches the halfway mark.
7. Proceed carefully, watching for further signs of overheating. If the engine overheats again, call an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
PLEDGE
- A severe loss of coolant indicates a leak in the cooling system. Have it inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.
- If the engine overheats, adding engine coolant suddenly to a hot engine may cause cracks in the engine. To prevent damage, add engine coolant slowly in small amounts. Several refilling cycles may be required to fully fill the engine cooling system. If necessary, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer to perform this task.
