Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)

~2min read

Vehicle Stability Management is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. It helps the vehicle remain stable during sudden acceleration or braking on wet, slippery, or uneven roads, where traction on the four wheels may suddenly become uneven.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions when using the Vehicle Stability Management system:

  • ALWAYS check your speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead. VSM does not replace safe driving practices.
  • Never drive too fast for road conditions. VSM cannot prevent accidents. Excessive speed in bad weather, on slippery or uneven roads can lead to serious accidents.

VSM Operation

During Operation

When you apply the brake under conditions that may activate ESC, you may hear brake noises or feel a corresponding sensation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your VSM is active.

Information

VSM does not operate when:

  • Driving on a sloped road, such as steep gradients.
  • Driving in reverse.
  • The ESC OFF indicator will illuminate.
  • The EPS (Electronic Power Steering) warning light ( ) is on or flashing.

VSM OFF Mode

To cancel VSM operation, press the ESC OFF button. ESC OFF () indicator light will illuminate.

To turn VSM back on, press the ESC OFF button again. The ESC OFF indicator will go off.

WARNING

If the ESC ( ) indicator or the EPS ( ) warning light stays on or flashes, there may be a malfunction in the VSM system of your vehicle. When the warning light illuminates, have your vehicle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE

Driving with wheels and tires of different sizes may cause the VSM system to malfunction. Before replacing a tire, make sure that all four tires and wheels are the same size. Never drive the vehicle with tires and wheels of different sizes installed.
