Driving Your Vehicle

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

~3min read

Electronic Stability Control helps stabilize the vehicle during cornering maneuvers.

ESC monitors the direction in which you are steering and the direction in which the vehicle is actually moving. ESC applies brake pressure to any of the vehicle's brakes and intervenes in the engine control system to help the driver keep the vehicle on the intended path. ESC is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Always adjust your speed and driving to road conditions.

WARNING

Never drive too fast for road conditions when cornering. ESC cannot prevent accidents.

Excessive speed in corners, abrupt maneuvers, and hydroplaning on wet surfaces can lead to serious accidents.

Cruise Control Operation

ESC On Condition

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the ESC and ESC OFF indicators come on for approximately three seconds. After both lights go off, ESC is on.

During Operation

  • When you apply the brake under conditions that may cause the wheels to lock, you may hear sounds from the brakes or feel a corresponding sensation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your ESC is active.
  • When ESC is activated, the engine may not respond to the accelerator pedal as it does under normal conditions.
  • If Cruise Control or Smart Cruise Control was in use when ESC is activated, Cruise Control or Smart Cruise Control will automatically disengage. Cruise Control or Smart Cruise Control can be turned on again when road conditions allow.
  • When exiting mud or when driving on a slippery road, engine RPM (revolutions per minute) may not increase even if you press the accelerator pedal fully. This is to maintain stability and traction of the vehicle and does not indicate a problem.

ESC OFF Condition

To cancel ESC operation:

• Condition 1

Briefly press the ESC OFF button. The ESC OFF indicator and/or the message "Traction Control Off" will illuminate. In this state, the ESC traction control function (engine control) is disabled, but the ESC brake control function (braking control) continues to operate.

• Condition 2

Press and hold the ESC OFF button continuously for more than 3 seconds. The ESC OFF indicator and/or the message "Traction and Stability Control Off" will illuminate and a warning chime will sound. In this state, both the ESC traction control function (engine control) and the ESC brake control function (braking control) are disabled.

If the ignition switch is in the LOCK/OFF position when ESC is off, ESC remains off. After restarting the engine, ESC will automatically turn on again.

Indicator Light

When the Engine Start/Stop button is in the ON position, the ESC indicator illuminates, then goes off if the ESC system is operating normally. The ESC indicator flashes whenever ESC is operating.

If the ESC indicator remains on, your vehicle may have a malfunction in the ESC system. When this warning light illuminates, we recommend that the vehicle be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

The ESC OFF indicator illuminates when ESC is turned off.

WARNING

When the ESC indicator flashes, it means ESC is active:

Drive slowly and NEVER attempt to accelerate. NEVER turn ESC off while the ESC indicator is flashing, or you may lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident.

NOTICE

Driving with wheels and tires of different sizes may cause the ESC system to malfunction. Before replacing a tire, make sure all four tires and wheels are the same size. Never drive the vehicle with wheels and tires of different sizes installed.

Using ESC OFF

While driving

The ESC OFF mode should be used only briefly to help free the vehicle if it is stuck in snow or mud, by temporarily stopping ESC operation to maintain wheel torque.

To turn ESC off while driving, press the ESC OFF button when driving on a flat road surface.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the drivetrain:

  • Do not allow the wheel(s) of one axle to spin excessively while the ESC, ABS, and parking brake warning lights are displayed. Damage resulting from this will not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Reduce engine power and do not spin the wheel(s) excessively while these lights are displayed.
  • When operating the vehicle on a dynamometer, make sure ESC is off (ESC OFF indicator illuminated).

Information

Turning ESC off does not affect ABS or normal operation of the brake system.
