Driver and Passenger Front Airbags

~2min read

Your vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and knee-shoulder seat belts for both the driver and the passenger.

The SRS consists of airbags located in the center of the steering wheel and the front passenger side instrument panel cover above the glove box.

The airbags are marked with the letters "AIR BAG" embossed on the cover trim.

The purpose of the SRS is to provide the driver and front passengers with additional protection beyond that offered by the seat belt system alone in the event of a frontal impact of sufficient severity.

The SRS uses sensors to collect information about the driver and front passenger seat belt use and the severity of the impact.

Seat belt buckle sensors determine whether the driver and front passenger seat belts are fastened. These sensors enable control of SRS deployment depending on whether the seat belts are fastened and how severe the impact was.

The advanced SRS system controls airbag deployment in two stages. The first stage level is intended for moderate-severity impacts. The second stage level is intended for more severe impacts.

Depending on the severity of the impact and seat belt usage, the SRS Control Module (SRSCM) controls airbag deployment. Failure to wear seat belts properly may increase the risk or severity of injury in an accident.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death from front airbag deployment, observe the following precautions:

  • Seat belts must always be worn to help passengers maintain the correct position.
  • Move the seat as far as possible from the front airbags while still maintaining control of the vehicle.
  • Never lean against the door or center console.
  • Do not allow the front passenger to place their feet on the instrument panel.
  • Do not place any objects (such as an emergency pad cover, mobile phone holder, cup holder, air freshener or stickers) on or near the airbag modules on the steering wheel, instrument panel, windshield, and front passenger panel above the glove box. Such objects may cause injury if the vehicle is involved in a collision severe enough to deploy the airbags.
  • Do not attach any objects to the windshield or rearview mirror.
