Power Steering System

The power steering system uses engine power to make steering the vehicle easier.

If the engine is off or the power steering system fails, the steering wheel can still be turned, but it requires considerably greater effort.

If any change is noticed in the effort required to turn the steering wheel during normal vehicle operation, contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer immediately to have the power steering system inspected.

Caution

Never hold the steering wheel in the full right or full left position for more than 5 seconds while the engine is running. Holding the steering wheel at either full lock position for more than 5 seconds may damage the power steering pump.

NOTE

If the power steering drive belt breaks or the power steering pump fails, the effort required to turn the steering wheel will increase significantly.

NOTE

If the vehicle has been parked outdoors for an extended period in cold weather (below -10 °C/14 °F), more effort may be required to turn the power-assisted steering wheel immediately after starting the engine. This is caused by increased fluid viscosity due to cold weather and is not a sign of a malfunction.

If this occurs, increase the engine speed by pressing the accelerator pedal to approximately 1,500 rpm, then release the pedal, or let the engine idle for two to three minutes to warm up the fluid.
