Self-Diagnosis Using GDS: Smart key system faults can be quickly diagnosed using GDS. GDS quickly operates the actuators to monitor input/output values and perform self-diagnosis. The following three functions are critical in the SMART KEY system.
  1. SMART KEY Device Input Problem.
  2. SMART KEY Unit Problem.
  3. SMART KEY Device Output Problem.
  4. SMART KEY Unit Input Problem: Switch Diagnosis
  5. SMART KEY Unit Problem: Communication Diagnosis
  6. SMART KEY Unit Output Problem: Antenna and Switch Diagnosis
  7. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector on the lower panel of the driver's side airbag, then turn on the GDS power.
  8. Select the vehicle model, then select the SMART KEY system.
  9. Select "SMART KEY Device".
  10. After turning the IG on, select "Current Data".
  11. You can view the status of each switch on the scan tool after connecting the "Current Data" process.
    Display Description
FL Switch ON: The driver's door handle button is on.
FR Switch ON: The auxiliary door handle button is on.
Main Switch ON: External line button is on.
Gear Position P ON: The shift lever is in the P position.
IGN 1 ON: The IGN switch is in the IG position.
ACC ON: The IGN switch is in the ACC position.
Push Switch ON: Push switch is on.
External Buzzer ON: Buzzer is on.
  12. The communication diagnosis checks that all linked components operate normally.
  13. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  14. After turning the ignition switch ON, select "DTC".
  15. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  16. With the ignition switched ON, select "ACTUATOR TEST".
  17. Place the smart key near the corresponding antenna and operate it using the GDS.
  18. If the smart key LED blinks, the smart key is normal.
  19. If the smart key LED does not blink, check the smart key battery voltage.
  20. Antenna Activation
    A. INTERIOR Antenna 1
    B. INTERIOR Antenna 2
    C. Trunk Antenna
    D. BUMPER/Antenna
    E. DRV_DR Antenna
    F. AST_DR Antenna
  21. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  22. Select "Antenna Status Check".
  23. After turning the IG switch ON, select "Antenna Status Check".
  24. Place the smart key near the corresponding antenna and operate it using the GDS.
  25. If the smart key operates normally, the corresponding antenna, the smart key (transmission and reception) and the external receiver are normal.
  26. Antenna Status
    A. INTERIOR Antenna 1
    B. INTERIOR Antenna 2
    C. Trunk Antenna
    D. BUMPER/Antenna
    E. DRV_DR Antenna
    F. AST_DR Antenna
  27. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  28. Select "Serial Link Check".
  29. With the ignition switched ON, select "Receiver Communication Line Check".
  30. Check the serial communication line using the GDS.
  31. If the receiver communication line operates normally, check "ESCL Communication Line Check".
  32. If the Smart Key operates normally, communication between the Smart Key unit, the external receiver, and the ESCL is normal.
  33. If the smart key does not operate normally, check the following items.
    A. Open or no response from the external receiver communication line.
    B. Short of the external receiver communication line to ground.
    C. Open circuit in ESCL or no response.
    D. Short to ground in ESCL.
  34. Place the Smart Key in the following shaded area and check whether the ignition is on.
  35. If the ignition is on, the antenna operates normally.
  36. Check the ignition mode of the internal antenna.
  37. Place the Smart Key in the following shaded area and activate the antenna. Make sure the Smart Key indicator flashes.
  38. If the Smart Key indicator does not flash, check the antenna in the shaded area.
  39. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  40. After turning the ignition ON, select "KEY FOB STATUS INFO".
  41. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  42. After turning the ignition switch ON, select "SMK STATUS INFO".
  43. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  44. After IGN ON, select "ESCL STATUS INFO".
  45. Connect the GDS cable to the data link connector (DLC) on the lower panel of the driver's side crash pad.
  46. After IGN ON, select "Neutralization Mode".
The following three diagnostic procedures are the main process for solving most problems. Switch Diagnosis, GDS Communication Diagnosis (Self-Diagnosis), Antenna Activation Diagnosis, Antenna Status Check, Serial Communication Status Check, Interior Antenna Activation Check, FOB Status Check, Smart Key Status Check, ESCL Status Check, Neutralization Status Check.
