Hitch Ball

Make sure all equipment is properly installed and maintained, and that it complies with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Hyundai recommends that all trailer towing equipment be installed at an authorized Hyundai dealer using recommended manufacturer accessory parts specifically designed for your vehicle.

Follow these rules when hitching:

  • The bumpers of your vehicle are not designed for towing. Do not attach rental hitches or other bumper-type hitches to them. Use only a frame-mounted trailer hitch that does not attach to the bumper.
  • No part of the rear license plate or vehicle lights may be obstructed by the mechanical hitch. If the rear license plate and/or lights may be partially obscured by any part of the mechanical hitch, hitch components that cannot be easily removed or moved without using any tools, except easily operated release mechanisms (force not exceeding 15 lbf.ft (20 N·m)) supplied by the hitch manufacturer, are not permitted. Note that an installed but unused mechanical hitch must always be removed or moved if the rear license plate and/or rear lights are obscured by any part of the mechanical hitch.
  • HYUNDAI trailer hitches are available from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Safety Chains

Always attach safety chains between your vehicle and trailer.

Safety chain installation instructions may be provided by the hitch manufacturer or trailer manufacturer. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations when attaching safety chains. Always leave just enough slack to allow the trailer to turn. Never let safety chains drag on the ground.

Trailer Brakes

State or local regulations may require trailers to have their own braking system if the loaded trailer weight exceeds certain minimums, which may vary from state to state.

Read and follow the instructions for the trailer brake system when it is installed, adjusted, and maintained correctly. Never attempt to connect to your vehicle's hydraulic brake system.

WARNING

Do not use a trailer with its own brakes unless you are absolutely sure that you can adjust the brake system correctly. This is not a job for amateurs. Use an experienced, competent trailer shop for this work.
