Winter Precautions
Use high-quality ethylene glycol-based engine coolant.
Your vehicle is delivered with high-quality ethylene glycol coolant in the cooling system. This is the only type of coolant that should be used because it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump, and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or top up your coolant according to the maintenance schedule in Chapter 9. Before winter, have the coolant tested to make sure its freezing point is sufficient for the temperatures expected in winter.
Check the Battery and Cables
Winter temperatures can affect battery performance. Inspect the battery and cables as described in Chapter 9. The battery charge level can be checked at an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or service station.
Change to "Winter" Oil if Necessary
In some regions, it is recommended to use a lower-viscosity "winter grade" engine oil in winter. In addition, replace the engine oil and filter if it is close to the next maintenance interval. Fresh engine oil ensures optimal engine operation during the winter months. For more information, refer to Chapter 10. If you are not sure about the type of winter oil, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Inspect Spark Plugs and Ignition System
Inspect the spark plugs as described in Chapter 9. Replace them if necessary. Also inspect all ignition wires and components for cracks, wear, and damage.
To Prevent Door Locks from Freezing
Use de-icer or glycerin approved for spraying into the keyhole. If the lock is already frozen, use de-icer spray approved for ice on the lock to remove it. If the inside of the lock is frozen, try thawing it with a heated key. Use a heated key carefully to avoid injury.
Use only windshield washer antifreeze solution approved for this vehicle.
Add windshield washer antifreeze solution as indicated on the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Windshield washer antifreeze solution is available from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and most automotive parts stores.
NOTICE
Do not use engine coolant or other types of antifreeze solution to prevent damage to the vehicle paint.
Prevent the Parking Brake from Freezing
Under certain conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This is most likely to occur when snow or ice has accumulated around or near the rear brakes, or the brakes are wet. When there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze: temporarily apply the parking brake with the shift lever in P (Park), block the rear wheels, and then release the parking brake.
Do not allow ice and snow to accumulate under
Under certain conditions, snow and ice may build up under the fenders and interfere with steering. When driving in such conditions during severe winter weather, inspect the underside of the vehicle regularly to make sure the front wheels and steering components are not blocked.
Carry Emergency Equipment
Depending on weather conditions, carry appropriate emergency equipment while driving. Some items you may want to carry include tire chains, tow straps or chains, a flashlight, emergency flares, sand, a shovel, jumper cables, an ice scraper, gloves, a rag, coveralls, a blanket, etc.
Do not place items or materials in the engine compartment.
Placing items or materials in the engine compartment may cause an engine accident or fire, because they can block engine cooling. Such damage is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Driving the vehicle when water vapor condenses and accumulates inside the exhaust pipe
When the vehicle is stopped for a long time in winter with the engine running, water vapor may condense and accumulate inside the exhaust pipe. Water in the exhaust pipe may cause noise, etc., but this disappears during medium and high speed driving.
