Seat Belt Pretensioner (BPT) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

Seat belt pretensioners (BPT) are installed inside the center pillars (left and right). In a vehicle collision of a certain severity in a frontal impact, the seat belt pretensioner helps reduce the impact force on front seat passengers by retracting the seat belt webbing. This prevents front occupants from being thrown forward and striking the steering wheel or instrument panel when the vehicle crashes.
Never attempt to measure the resistance of the seat belt pretensioner (BPT) circuit, even when using the specified tester. If the circuit resistance is measured with a tester, the pretensioner may accidentally ignite. This may result in serious injury.
