What to Do in an Emergency

Tire Replacement with TPMS

~3min read

If a tire goes flat, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate. We recommend having the system checked by an authorized Kia dealer.

CAUTION

We recommend using a sealant approved by Kia.

The sealant on the tire pressure sensor and wheel must be removed when you replace the tire with a new one.

Each wheel is equipped with a tire pressure sensor installed inside the tire behind the valve stem. You must use TPMS-specific wheels. It is recommended that tire repairs always be performed by an authorized Kia dealer.

Even if you replace the low-pressure tire with the spare tire, the low tire pressure warning light will remain illuminated until the low-pressure tire has been repaired and installed on the vehicle.

After you replace the low-pressure tire with the spare tire, the TPMS malfunction indicator may illuminate after a few minutes because the TPMS sensor installed on the spare wheel is not initialized.

After the low-pressure tire is inflated to the recommended pressure and installed on the vehicle, or the TPMS sensor installed on the replaced spare wheel is initialized by an authorized Kia dealer, the TPMS malfunction indicator and the low tire pressure warning light will turn off after a few minutes of driving.

If the indicator does not turn off after a few minutes of driving, we recommend having the system checked by an authorized Kia dealer.

CAUTION

When replacing the originally installed tire with the spare tire, the TPMS sensor on the replacement spare wheel should be initialized and the TPMS sensor on the original installed wheel must be deactivated. If the TPMS sensor on the original wheel, stored in the spare wheel holder, is still activated, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System may not operate correctly. We recommend that the system be serviced by an authorized Kia dealer.

You may not be able to identify a low tire simply by looking at it. Always use a good quality tire pressure gauge to measure tire pressure. Please note that a tire that is hot (from driving) will have a higher pressure reading than a cold tire (after parking for at least 3 hours and driving less than 1.6 km (1 mile) during that 3-hour period).

Allow the tires to cool before measuring tire pressure. Always make sure the tires are cold before inflating them to the recommended pressure.

A cold tire means the vehicle has been parked for 3 hours and driven less than 1.6 km (1 mile) during that 3-hour period.

CAUTION

We recommend using a sealant approved by Kia if your vehicle is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Liquid sealant may damage the tire pressure sensors.

CAUTION - TPMS

  • The TPMS cannot warn you of severe and sudden tire damage caused by external factors such as nails or road debris.
  • If you feel the vehicle becoming unstable, immediately release the accelerator pedal, apply the brake gradually with light force, and slowly move the vehicle to a safe place off the road.

WARNING - TPMS Protection

Interference, modification, or disabling of the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may interfere with the system's ability to warn the driver of low tire pressure conditions and/or TPMS malfunctions. Tampering, modifying, or disabling TPMS components may void the warranty on this part of the vehicle.

CAUTION - FOR EUROPE

  • Do not modify the vehicle, as this may interfere with the operation of the TPMS.
  • Aftermarket wheels do not have a TPMS sensor. For your safety, we recommend using replacement parts from an authorized Kia dealer.
  • If you use aftermarket wheels, use a TPMS sensor approved by a Kia dealer. If your vehicle is not equipped with a TPMS sensor or the TPMS does not operate properly, you may not pass the periodic vehicle inspection conducted in your country.
❈ All vehicles sold in the EUROPEAN market during the periods listed below must be equipped with TPMS.
    - New vehicle model: from November 1, 2012
    - Current vehicle model: from November 1, 2014 (based on vehicle registration)
