Seat Belt Restraint System

~2min read

Seat belts are designed to fit the bony structure of the body and should be worn low across the hips, chest and shoulders, as applicable; avoid wearing the lap portion of the belt across the abdomen.

Seat belts should be adjusted as closely as possible to the body for comfort, to provide the protection for which they were designed.

Belt slack significantly reduces the protection provided to the occupant.

Take care to avoid contaminating the webbing with polishes, oils and chemicals, especially battery acid. Cleaning can be safely performed using mild soap and water. The belt must be replaced if the webbing is worn, contaminated or damaged.

  • For maximum protection by the restraint system, seat belts must always be worn whenever the vehicle is moving. The shoulder belt should be positioned midway across your shoulder and collarbone.
  • Never allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. Refer to the Child Restraint System section for further discussion.

WARNING - Shoulder Belt

Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. An improperly positioned shoulder belt cannot protect the passenger in an accident.

Always wear both the shoulder portion and the lap portion of the seat belt.

  • No modifications or additions should be made by the user that would interfere with the seat belt retractor operation or prevent the seat belt assembly from being adjusted to remove slack.
  • When fastening the seat belt, be careful not to latch the seat belt buckle of other seats. This is very dangerous, and you cannot be properly protected by the seat belt.
  • Do not unbuckle the seat belt or fasten and unfasten the seat belt several times while driving. This may lead to loss of control and a fatal accident, serious injury or property damage.
  • When fastening the seat belt, make sure the seat belt does not pass over hard objects, or it may easily break.

WARNING - Damaged Seat Belt

Replace the entire seat belt assembly if any part of the belt webbing or hardware is damaged, as you can no longer be sure that a damaged seat belt will provide protection in a crash.

WARNING - Twisted Seat Belt

Make sure your seat belt is not twisted when worn. A twisted seat belt cannot properly protect you in an accident and may even cut into your body.

CAUTION - Seat Belt Buckle

Do not allow foreign materials (gum, crumbs, coins, etc.) to block the seat belt buckle. This may prevent the seat belt from latching securely.
