Maintenance When Towing

~2min read

When towing regularly, the Kia Opirus requires more frequent maintenance, especially for engine oil, transmission fluid and brakes. The towing device and trailer must also be checked regularly. This chapter warns against overloading and explains how to calculate permissible gross weights. Under high temperatures or on mountain routes, the load can increase considerably. Timely maintenance prevents costly damage.

If you tow a trailer regularly, your vehicle must be serviced more often. Engine oil, transmission fluid and engine coolant are particularly important in this context. The brake system also requires more frequent inspection. All maintenance tasks and inspections are described in this manual, but we recommend having maintenance work carried out by your KIA dealer.

Please remember that the trailer and towing device also require maintenance. Follow the trailer manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Carry out a visual inspection before every trip with a trailer. It is especially important that all bolts and nuts on the towing device are tightened securely.

NOTE

Due to the higher load when towing, the engine may overheat in high outside temperatures or when driving up gradients. If engine coolant overheating is indicated, switch off the air conditioning and stop the vehicle in a safe place to let the engine cool down.

Overloading

CAUTION

The permissible gross vehicle weight and the permissible axle loads of your vehicle can be found in the vehicle registration documents or on the vehicle data plate. Exceeding these weights can lead to accidents and vehicle damage. Calculate the payload when loading the vehicle by adding up the weights of the cargo and/or passengers. Make sure you never overload your vehicle.

Regular maintenance is especially important when towing a trailer with the Kia Opirus 2003–2011. Increased wear caused by additional loads requires more frequent checks of oil, coolant and brakes.

The towing device and the trailer itself should also be checked regularly to ensure the safety and reliability of the combination. This keeps the Kia Opirus a robust and long-lasting vehicle.
