Airbag Disposal

Special Service Tools Required

Deployment Tool 0957A-34100A Before disposing of any airbags or side airbags (including those installed in a vehicle to be scrapped), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed. If the vehicle is still under warranty, the Technical Manager must give approval and/or special instruction before deploying the airbags or side airbags. Only after the airbags or side airbags have deployed (for example, as a result of a vehicle collision) may they be disposed of. If the airbags or side airbags are found undamaged (not deployed), handle them with special care. Follow these procedures: Deploying Airbags in the Vehicle If a vehicle equipped with an SRS is to be completely scrapped, the airbags or side airbags must be deployed while in the vehicle. Airbags or side airbags should not be treated as disposable parts and must never be installed in another vehicle.
  1. Turn the ignition OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least 3 minutes.
  2. Make sure each airbag or side airbag is securely mounted.
  3. Make sure the special tool operates correctly by performing the check procedure.
    1. Driver airbag:
      • Remove the driver airbag and install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
      • Install the driver airbag onto the steering wheel.
    2. Front passenger airbag:
      • Remove the glove box housing, then disconnect the connector between the front passenger airbag and the main SRS harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-2E110).
    3. Side airbag:
      • Disconnect the 2P connector between the side airbag and the wiring harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3F100).
    4. Curtain airbag:
      • Disconnect the 2-pin connector between the curtain airbag and the wiring harness.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
    5. Seat belt pretensioner:
      • Disconnect the 2P connector from the seat belt pretensioner.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
    6. Anchor pretensioner:
      • Disconnect the 2-pin connector from the anchor pretensioner.
      • Install the SST (0957A-3Q100).
  4. Place the deployment tool at least 10 meters (30 ft) away from the airbag.
  5. Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.
  6. Press the tool's deployment switch. The airbag should deploy (deployment is clearly heard and seen: loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag, followed by slow deflation).
  7. Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.
  8. Make sure the special tool works correctly by performing the check procedure on this page.
  9. Place the airbag face up, and the EFD (emergency fastening device) and the hood active actuator must be stacked at least 5 tires high, outdoors on a level surface at least thirty feet (10 meters) away from any obstacles or people.
  10. Connect a 12-volt battery to the tool.
  11. Press the tool's deployment switch. The airbag should deploy (deployment is clearly heard and seen: loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag, followed by slow deflation).
  12. Dispose of the airbag as a complete unit. No parts may be reused. Place it in a strong plastic bag and seal it securely.
Deployment of Airbag Outside the Vehicle: If an undamaged airbag has been removed from a scrapped vehicle, or defects or damage were found during transport, storage, or service, it must be deployed as follows:
  • When the EFD and the active hood actuator deploy, broken parts can explode and scatter.
  • The EFD and the active hood actuator must be placed in a stack of 5 tires to prevent broken parts from exploding.
  • Technicians must wear safety glasses and exercise extreme caution around exploding broken parts.
Disposal of a Damaged Airbag
  1. If installed in the vehicle, perform the removal procedure for the driver airbag, front passenger airbag, and side airbag.
  2. In all cases, short the two wires of the airbag inflator together by twisting them.
  3. Package the airbag in exactly the same packaging in which the new replacement part was delivered.
